Das Commonwealth oder Commonwealth of Nations ist eine Gruppe von 53 Staaten, die alle (bis auf zwei) früher Teil des britischen Empire waren. Das Commonwealth wurde in den frühen 1900er Jahren gegründet, als Nationen, die früher Teil des britischen Empire waren, begannen, sich abzuspalten. Sein Hauptziel war es, den Prozess der britischen Entkolonialisierung zu erleichtern. Es wurde als eine Möglichkeit gesehen, die globale Einheit durch gemeinsame Sprache, Geschichte und Kultur trotz wachsender Unabhängigkeit und Selbstverwaltung ehemaliger britischer Kolonien aufrechtzuerhalten. Insgesamt gehören dem Commonwealth 2,328 Milliarden Menschen an, was einem Drittel der Weltbevölkerung entspricht. Trotz massiver geografischer und demografischer Unterschiede sollen diese Länder durch ihre gemeinsamen Werte Demokratie, Menschenrechte und Rechtsstaatlichkeit vereint sein. Die Nationen, die dem Commonwealth beitreten, tun dies freiwillig, und die Regierung jeder Mitgliedsnation kann sich jederzeit ohne Konsequenzen oder Verpflichtung zurückziehen.
