Sohn des Karlmanns, der erste Stellvertreter Christi der neu gegründeten katholischen [Kirche](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kirche/) im Jahr 742. Als [ältester](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/aeltester/) hieß er mit ziemlicher Sicherheit Karlmann.  
751 begleitete er seinen Vater Carloman und Onkel Pepin bei ihrer erfolgreichen Invasion in [Italien](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/italien/), um [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) zu erobern. 752 griff die byzantinische Gegenseite jedoch an und tötete seinen Vater, den ersten katholischen Führer (Zacharias).  
[Stephen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/stephen/) zusammen mit seinem [Bruder](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bruder/) gelang die Flucht in das fränkische Gebiet, wo Pepin eine aufwendige Zeremonie und die erste „Krönung“ in der [Geschichte](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/geschichte/) in [St. Denis](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/st-denis/) Bascilica durchführte, wo „[Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/)“ [Stephen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/stephen/) [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) Pepin (seinen Onkel) zum Patrizius Romanorum (Patrizier des Römer).  
Sowohl Pepin als [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) [Stephen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/stephen/) blieben in der schöpferischen [Entwicklung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/entwicklung/) der katholischen [Kirche](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kirche/) in [St. Denis](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/st-denis/), bis die Franken 755 ihre Flotte starteten und [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) angriffen. Die byzantinische Garnison wurde geschlachtet. Pepin engagierte daraufhin die Truppen des lombardischen Königs [Aistulf](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/aistulf/), die kein Viertel zeigten.  
Innerhalb von weniger als einem Jahr wurden die einst „unbesiegbaren Langobarden“ von der professionellen fränkischen [Armee](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/armee/) in Stücke geschnitten. Bis 756 hatte Pepin das gesamte Gebiet erobert, das früher vom Exarchen von Ravenna besetzt war, und [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) [Aistulf](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/aistulf/) vertrieben. Der historische Mythos behauptet, Pepin habe [Aistulf](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/aistulf/) das [Leben](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/leben/) erlaubt und er sei „aus Versehen“ kurz darauf auf der Jagd gestorben. Dennoch gibt es kein Versteck, dass die Franken irgendwie [besessene](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/besessene/) Krieger waren, wenn es darum ging, wie sie die Langobarden entsandten. Keine Gefangenen. Keine noblen [Begriffe](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/begriffe/) für einen späteren Aufstand.  
[Ende](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ende/) 756, nachdem alle größeren Bedrohungen der italienischen Halbinsel beseitigt waren, unternahm Pepin eine der außergewöhnlichsten und einzigartigsten Aktionen in der [Geschichte](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/geschichte/) die [katholische Kirche](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/katholische-kirche/), jetzt zum ersten Mal in der [Geschichte](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/geschichte/) die [römisch-katholische Kirche](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/roemisch-katholische-kirche/) genannt.  
Pepin verließ einen beträchtlichen Teil seiner [Armee](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/armee/) in [Italien](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/italien/) im Dienste seines Neffen [Stephen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/stephen/) und kehrte zurück, um einen blutigen Angriff auf die Sarazenen in Gallien zu starten, wobei er die einst „unbesiegbaren Mauren“ aus Gallien vertrieb und die Acquitaine-Region vollständig in [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Königreich integrierte .  
757 wurde [Stephen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/stephen/) jedoch auf mysteriöse Weise vergiftet, vermutlich von einem Agenten Konstantinopels. Der Führer der katholischen [Kirche](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kirche/) ging dann zu seinem jüngeren [Bruder](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bruder/) Paul I.
