Gérard wurde als Sohn des Abtgrafen von Aurillac in den [Adel](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/adel/) hineingeboren, was ihm gelang. [Sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Vater / Großvater ließ als erster Graf auf dem Gelände des Familiengutes in Aurillac ein Kloster und ein Skriptorium errichten.  
Infolgedessen hatte Gérard Zugang zu einer der wohl besten Privatsammlungen von Handschriften in [Europa](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/europa/) zu dieser [Zeit](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zeit/) sowie zu einer [Armee](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/armee/) von Schriftgelehrten und Tutoren. Es wird behauptet, dass Gérard durch [Atto](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/atto/) von Vic in der Nähe von [Barcelona](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/barcelona/) etwas über arabische [Mathematik](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mathematik/) und Naturwissenschaften gelernt hat. Es ist jedoch wahrscheinlicher, dass [Atto](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/atto/) von Vic ein leitender Schreiber und Tutor in der berühmten Familienabtei und dem Scriptorium in Aurillac war.  
In einer anderen wilden Behauptung wird gesagt, dass Gérard von Kaiser Otto I. zum königlichen Tutor für seinen Sohn (zukünftiger Kaiser Otto II.) Ernannt wurde. Diese Behauptung ist [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) höchst verdächtig, da Gérard [Adel](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/adel/) von Westfranken ([Frankreich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frankreich/)) und ein Vasall der karolingischen Könige war – Erbfeinde des sächsischen Kleinadels. Fast sicher ist, dass Gérard als einer der besten Köpfe Frankreichs zum königlichen Hoflehrer von [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) Ludwig IV. (936-954) in Paris ernannt wurde, wodurch er in direkten Kontakt mit der Kapetendynastie geriet.  
Als [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Leo VII. (952-972) starb, ernannte [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) Lothair (954-986) Gérard zu seinem Tutor als neuen [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Sylvester II. – ein ungewöhnlich kühner Name, der Sylvester als fiktiver [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) bezeichnete, den die Pippins als Teil der [Mythen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mythen/) Konstantins schufen –Zentral für die Gründung der katholischen [Kirche](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kirche/) im Jahr 742.  
Um größtmögliche Verwirrung zu stiften, behauptet die [Geschichte](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/geschichte/) des römischen Kults, Sylvester II. Habe sich bei Besuchen in [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) mit mehreren Mitgliedern der heidnischen, satanischen Pontifex [Maximus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/maximus/) Grafen von Tusculum getroffen, darunter Pontifex [Maximus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/maximus/) [Johannes](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/johannes/) XIII. Und der heidnische Hohepriester Pontifex [Maximus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/maximus/) Gregory V. Menschenopfergrafen von Tusculum galten bereits im 10. und 11. Jahrhundert als die bösesten Menschen, die jemals auf der [Erde](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/erde/) gelebt haben – und keiner behauptete, christlich zu [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/), bis zum unheiligen Plan Gregors VII. im 11. Jahrhundert.  
[Auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) Sylvester II. Besuchte [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) nicht. Die Ottoner hatten mit ihren eigenen „Benedikt“ -Päpsten eine eigene Version des [Katholizismus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/katholizismus/) geschaffen – im Gegensatz zu den [Franzosen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/franzosen/). Die Ottonianer respektierten Sylvester jedoch sehr – nicht nur wegen seines brillanten Verstandes, sondern [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) wegen der Ähnlichkeiten des Erbes seiner [Familie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/familie/) von Priesteradligen.  
In Bezug auf die [Erziehung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/erziehung/) hat es wohl keinen anderen [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) gegeben, der seine [Zeit](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zeit/) stärker beeinflusst hat als Sylvester. In einer Generation gelang es ihm, den Klosterschulen arabische Kenntnisse in Arithmetik, [Mathematik und Astronomie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mathematik-und-astronomie/) zu vermitteln. Sylvester ließ [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) mehrere Exemplare [alter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/alter/) wissenschaftlicher Instrumente verteilen, darunter den wiederentdeckten Abakus und die Armillarsphäre.  
Sylvester hat auf der Basis des „Triviums“ – [Grammatik](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/grammatik/), [Logik](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/logik/) und [Rhetorik](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rhetorik/) – neue höhere Bildungsstandards etabliert. In [allen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/allen/) Bereichen der [Wissenschaft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/wissenschaft/) war er seiner [Zeit](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zeit/) voraus und führte zum ersten Mal die hydraulische Orgel in der Kathedrale von Reims ein.  
Sylvester starb 1012, nachdem er in [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) noch nie einen Fuß gesetzt hatte. Das Datum seines Todes wurde auf 1002 zurückverlegt, um mit der Regierungszeit der Päpste zusammenzufallen, die im 16./17. Jahrhundert in der Version der mehrfach bearbeiteten Fälschung Liber Pontificalis veröffentlicht wurde.

Von [Frankreich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frankreich/) (993-1031) ernannte dann den Sohn von Sylvester II., [Auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) bekannt als Gérard von Riom (später verderbt als Graf Ebles I. von Roucy), zum neuen katholischen [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) [Nikolaus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/nikolaus/) II. (1012-1046).
