Ähnlich wie das Verstecken des Erbes seines Vaters wird Jacques [Identität](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/identitaet/) typischerweise als Jacques Fournier-Erbe „unbekannt“ geschrieben – geboren in Saverdun, [Frankreich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frankreich/) und Mönch.  
Als junger [Mann](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mann/) schien er das [Blut](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/blut/) und die Wildheit der Jagd zu bevorzugen, die in den wenigen verbliebenen Ländern der [Katharer](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/katharer/) in der [Region](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/region/) Ariège stattfand. Er war für die endgültigen Massaker an den Katharern von Montaillou verantwortlich.  
Im [Alter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/alter/) von 20 Jahren erhielt er seinen Cardinals-Hut.  
Als [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Vater, [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) [Johannes](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/johannes/) XXII., Am 4. Dezember 1334 starb, wurde Jacques der Jüngere vierzehn Tage später, am 20. Dezember 1334, im [Alter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/alter/) von 27 Jahren von den jetzt dominierenden französischen Kardinälen zum [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) ernannt.  
Wie [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Vater gab [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Benedikt XII. Weiterhin päpstliche Bullen heraus, die ketzerisch auf die vorher festgelegte Doktrin der katholischen [Kirche](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kirche/) Bezug nahmen, einschließlich eines seitdem zerstörten päpstlichen Bullen, der das Konzept der Unbefleckten [Empfängnis](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/empfaengnis/) anprangerte.  
Um ihn bei der [Führung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/fuehrung/) der Finanzangelegenheiten des Papsttums zu unterstützen, ernannte er 1338 Pierre Roger ([Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Clemens VI.) Zum [Kardinal](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kardinal/) und Finanzverwalter.  
Als Clemens VI. Am 25. April 1342 im [Alter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/alter/) von nur 35 Jahren plötzlich starb, hatte er keinen gleichaltrigen männlichen Erben, mit dem er die päpstliche Erbdynastie des Hauses Bertrand de Got fortsetzen konnte.  
Stattdessen wurde der vertraute [Kardinal](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kardinal/) Pierre Roger 1342 zum [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Clemens VI. Ernannt.
