Der gebürtige Sienaer, ein Mitglied der berühmten Bankenfamilie von Chigi und ein Großneffe von [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Paul V. (1605–1621), wurde privat unterrichtet und promovierte schließlich in [Philosophie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/philosophie/), [Recht](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/recht/) und [Theologie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/theologie/) an der [Universität](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/universitaet/) von Siena.  
1627 begann er seine Lehre als vizepäpstlicher Legat bei Ferrara und wurde auf Empfehlung zweier Kardinäle nacheinander zum Inquisitor von Malta und [Nuntius](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/nuntius/) in Köln ernannt (1639–1651). Dort unterstützte er Urban VIII. Bei der Verurteilung von Jansenius ‚Augustinus durch den In eminenti-Papst von 1642.  
1648 war [Kardinal](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kardinal/) Fabio Chigi im [Namen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/namen/) von [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Innozenz X. (1644-1655) aktiv, um den fragilen Vertrag von Westfalen, der den Dreißigjährigen [Krieg](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/krieg/) (1618-1648) beendete, zu destabilisieren und zu stoppen. Trotz des Scheiterns wurde er dann zum [Kardinalstaatssekretär](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kardinalstaatssekretaer/) unter Innocent X ernannt.  
Als Innozenz X. starb, wurde Chigi, der von Spanien favorisierte Kandidat, nach achtzig Tagen im [Konklave](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konklave/) am 7. April 1655 unter dem [Namen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/namen/) [Alexander VII](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/alexander-vii/). Zum [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) gewählt.  
Im April 1656 kündigte er an, dass [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) [Bruder](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bruder/) und seine Neffen ihn in [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) unterstützen würden. Die [Verwaltung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/verwaltung/) wurde größtenteils in die [Hände](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/haende/) seiner Verwandten gegeben, und der Vetternwirtschaft wurde so luxuriös verankert wie im Barockpapsttum: Er gab ihnen die bestbezahlten bürgerlichen und kirchlichen Ämter sowie fürstliche Schlösser und Anwesen, die für die Chigi von geeignet waren Siena.

Als die Venezianer auf [Kreta](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kreta/) um Hilfe gegen die osmanischen Türken riefen, holte [der Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/der-papst/) im Gegenzug ein Versprechen ein, dass die [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) nach ihrer Vertreibung im Jahr 1606 wieder in venezianisches Gebiet zurückkehren sollten. Er beteiligte sich [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) weiterhin an ihrem Konflikt mit den Jansenisten, deren Verurteilung er als Berater von [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Innozenz X energisch unterstützt hatte.  
Er starb am 22. Mai 1667 und wurde von Bernini in einem der aufwendigsten und teuersten Gräber der modernen [Geschichte](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/geschichte/) verewigt.  
**Die meisten bösen Verbrechen**

Von Verbrechen gegen die Menschlichkeit (1663-68) Dass die fortgesetzte Unterdrückung des alten medizinischen Wissens, der [Aufklärung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/aufklaerung/), der Hygiene und die gezielte Verbreitung von falschen medizinischen Theorien direkt zum Ausbruch eines massiven Seuchenausbruchs in ganz [Europa](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/europa/) beitrug, der den [Tod](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/tod/) von über 50 Millionen Menschen verursachte ( fünfzig Millionen) unschuldige Menschen. Der [Vatikan](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/vatikan/) hat nicht nur absichtlich jegliche Hilfe zurückgehalten, und nicht einen Dollar dafür ausgegeben, sondern einmal dagegen aktiv versucht, Verzögerungen, Fehlinformationen, Ängste und [Vorurteile](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/vorurteile/) zu verursachen, um das [Elend](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/elend/) dieser Pandemie zu fördern und auszudehnen.  
Über Verbrechen gegen die Menschlichkeit (1666): Katholische Jesuitenpriester auf Befehl Roms setzten in ganz London zahlreiche [Feuer](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/feuer/), um die [Herrschaft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/herrschaft/) Karls zu zerstören und den Iren die [Schuld](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/schuld/) zu geben. Die Iren werden für die nächsten zweihundert Jahre beschuldigt und brutal behandelt, bis das [Feuer](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/feuer/) schließlich als „[Unfall](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/unfall/)“ bezeichnet wird.
