Gaius Fulvius Victor ist in Leptis Magna (modernes Libyen, südöstlich von Karthago, modernes Tunesien, Nordafrika) geboren und aufgewachsen. [Marcus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/marcus/) stammte aus einer wohlhabenden, angesehenen und alten [Familie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/familie/), die mit den ursprünglichen Königen von [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) verwandt war und Besitzungen in Tusculum südlich von [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) besaß. [Sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Urgroßvater Fulvius Pius war gezwungen, aus [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) zu fliehen, nachdem [Antonius](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/antonius/) Pius – ein engagierter Gnostiker – alle römischen Adligen der paulinischen Sekte ([Katholizismus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/katholizismus/)) hinrichten wollte, die immer noch an Menschenopfern beteiligt waren.  
Nachdem [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Septimus Severus zum Kaiser ernannt worden war, reiste Gaius mit seinem Vater [Marcus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/marcus/) und Großvater Victor nach [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/), wo [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Großvater prompt zum neuen [Bischof](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bischof/) von [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) der Paulinität ernannt wurde (Vorläufer des [Katholizismus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/katholizismus/)).  
Während der Regierungszeit seines Großvaters, des 2. Papstes in der römischen [Geschichte](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/geschichte/), war die Regierungszeit seines Vaters (Zephynrinus) weniger bemerkenswert. Nach der Hinrichtung seines Onkels und seiner Cousins durch Kaiser [Caracalla](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/caracalla/) (198-217) um 205 ist es wahrscheinlich, dass zur gleichen [Zeit](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zeit/) [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Vater hingerichtet wurde.  
Ein Hinweis auf das Exil in die Minen Sardiniens stimmt mit dieser wahrscheinlichen Reihe von Ereignissen überein, und für einen Zeitraum von etwa 12 Jahren gab es in [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) erneut keinen [Bischof](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bischof/) ([Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/)).  
[Caracalla](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/caracalla/) starb im Jahr 217 und es besteht die eindeutige Möglichkeit, dass dieses Ereignis das [Leben](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/leben/) von Gaius gerettet hat, da [Caracalla](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/caracalla/) durch [Marcus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/marcus/) Opellius Macrinus (217-218) ersetzt und die Severaner-Dynastie für eine Weile abgelenkt wurde.  
Der neue Kaiser ließ ihn frei und [Marcus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/marcus/) kehrte nach [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) zurück und beanspruchte die Position des 4. Papstes aller Zeiten von [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) bis 217, wobei er den [Namen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/namen/) Callixtus annahm – lateinischer Name [abgeleitet](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/abgeleitet/) vom Griechischen, [abgeleitet](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/abgeleitet/) vom griechischen καλλιστος (kallistos) „Schönste“ .  
Die Hinweise auf angebliche Bischöfe (Päpste) zwischen den 129 Jahren, in denen es weder einen Pauliner- noch einen Boethusianer-Papst gab, waren eine schäbige Fälschung, einschließlich der Indiginität, namenlose Leichen als die behaupteten Überreste fiktiver Menschen zu verkleiden.  
Bis zum Jahr 218 hatten die Severaner den Kaiser durch einen ihrer eigenen Elagabalus (218-222) ersetzt, einen bloßen Teenager, der sich in Selbstprostitution, [Lust](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/lust/) und [Ausschweifung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ausschweifung/) verirrt hatte. Ob Callixtus die Korruption und eventuelle Ereignisse bis zum [Tod](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/tod/) des jungen Kaisers aktiv vorantrieb, ist ungewiss, mit der [Ausnahme](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ausnahme/), dass Callixtus rasch an [Macht](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/macht/) und Einfluss gewann.  
Callixtus ist historisch als der erste [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) anerkannt, der die geistige [Kraft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kraft/) beansprucht, alle Sünden zu vergeben – etwas, das die Boethusianer genauso wütend gemacht hätte wie [Tertullian](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/tertullian/). Er gründete [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) eine neue Schule in [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) für die [Ausbildung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ausbildung/) von „Priestern“. In Wirklichkeit waren diese Personen [nichts](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/nichts/) weiter als Schläger und Analphabeten, die dann von Callixtus angewiesen wurden, Gegner seiner [Herrschaft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/herrschaft/) zu töten.  
[Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Kallixt nutzte [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) seinen Einfluss auf den jungen Kaiser, um den berühmten Lehrer [Origenes](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/origenes/), Sohn von Clemens (St. [Clemens von Alexandria](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/clemens-von-alexandria/)), um 221 im Exil ermorden zu lassen.  
Aber das Glück von [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Callixtus ging zu [Ende](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ende/), als der junge Kaiser und seine [Mutter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mutter/) 222 vom Prätorianer hingerichtet wurden. Während die Ordnung von seinem Cousin [Marcus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/marcus/) Severus [Alexander](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/alexander/) (222-235) wiederhergestellt wurde, ist es höchst unwahrscheinlich, dass Callixtus oder ein Teil seiner [Familie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/familie/) es geschafft hat raus aus der [Stadt](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/stadt/) lebendig.  
Das Datum für seinen [Tod](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/tod/) ist daher 222.
