[Marcus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/marcus/) stammte aus einer wohlhabenden, angesehenen und alten [Familie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/familie/), die mit den ursprünglichen Königen von [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) verwandt war und Besitzungen in Tusculum südlich von [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) besaß. Als [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Vater [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Victor 199 starb, wurde [Marcus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/marcus/) der nächste hochrangige [Priester](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/priester/) Pontifex [Maximus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/maximus/) und ist als Zephyrinus bekannt, ein [Wort](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/wort/), das vom griechischen Zephyros stammt und „intelligent“ bedeutet.  
In einem bewussten Wortspiel mit den stark bearbeiteten Werken von Hippolytus, dem letzten Führer der Gnostiker in [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/), soll er ihn als einfachen [Mann](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mann/) ohne [Bildung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bildung/) beschrieben haben, einen schwachen [Mann](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mann/), der „nicht in der kirchlichen [Herrschaft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/herrschaft/) ausgebildet“ ist. Angesichts des Namens „intelligent“ kann man am besten annehmen, dass die [Fälschungen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/faelschungen/) der Werke von Hippolytos Anzeichen von Schwäche und mangelndem Können aufweisen.  
In [Wahrheit](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/wahrheit/) hatte [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Vater den Sohn von Valentinus 193 lange ermorden lassen, als er nur der zweite Nichtkaiser in der [Geschichte](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/geschichte/) wurde, der den Titel von Pontifex [Maximus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/maximus/) annahm. Stattdessen behauptete Pontifex [Maximus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/maximus/) Zephyrinus, der [Betrug](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/betrug/) stamme von seinem Vater, dass der „große Hippolyt“ noch am [Leben](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/leben/) sei.  
Pontifex [Maximus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/maximus/) Zephyrinus setzte die [Arbeit](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/arbeit/) fort, die [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Vater begonnen hatte, um das Phrygianum von Magna Mater (der große Tempel der Cybele) auf dem Vatikan-Hügel zu restaurieren.  
Es gibt zwar keine direkten äußeren [Beweise](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/beweise/) für seine Regierungszeit, aber es ist klar, dass sich die [Beziehung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/beziehung/) zwischen seiner [Familie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/familie/) und der Severan-Dynastie unter Kaiser [Caracalla](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/caracalla/) (198-217) dramatisch verschlechtert hat.  
[Sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) [Bruder](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bruder/) Gaius Fulvius Plautianus, der Befehlshaber der Prätorianergarde, wurde der Verschwörung gegen den Kaiser beschuldigt und 205 hingerichtet. [Tertullian](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/tertullian/) gab sogar seinen Posten auf, als er die von seinem Vater aus Ekel eingeleiteten Revisionen des Cybele-Kults unterstützte und kehrte nach Karthago zurück, um ihn zu schaffen [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) eigener Kult.  
Dann befahl Carcalla 211 die Ermordung seiner eigenen [Frau](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frau/) und [Familie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/familie/), der Tochter und Enkelin von Gaius Fulvius Plautianus.  
Pontifex [Maximus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/maximus/) Zephyrinus starb spätestens 217, im selben Jahr, in dem [Caracalla](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/caracalla/) starb. Es ist fast sicher, dass er ermordet wurde und möglicherweise früher hingerichtet wurde, nachdem er in die Verschwörung verwickelt war. Angesichts der Tatsache, dass [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Sohn (Callixtus) in die Minen von Sardinien verbannt worden [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) soll, ist es wahrscheinlich, dass er um 205 hingerichtet wurde.
