Zu den während seines Pontifikats erreichten Reformen gehörte eine bemerkenswerte administrative Neuorganisation der päpstlichen [Kurie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kurie/). Mit der geringen Hilfe europäischer Könige versuchte er, die Sarazenen aus [Italien](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/italien/) zu vertreiben, nachdem sie bis nach [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) vorgedrungen waren. Er scheiterte und musste Tribut zahlen. [Johannes](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/johannes/) verteidigte den heiligen Methodius gegen seine deutschen Feinde, die sich dem Gebrauch der slawischen [Sprache](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sprache/) in der [Liturgie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/liturgie/) widersetzten. John bestätigte später die Erlaubnis zur Nutzung der slawischen [Sprache](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sprache/), die ursprünglich von [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Adrian II., Johns Vorgänger, erteilt worden war.  
So hinterließ [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) [Johannes](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/johannes/) VIII., Der von 872 bis 882 regierte, mindestens 382 Briefe, von denen nicht weniger als 150 die [Exkommunikation](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/exkommunikation/) betrafen. Interessanterweise beschäftigten sich fast alle mit den zeitlichen Besitztümern der [Kirche](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kirche/) – einige mit wertvollen wesentlichen soliden Angelegenheiten wie dem Transfer oder der Verheißung eines ganzen Königreichs, andere mit den lächerlichsten und kleinlichsten Sorgen. Um eines zu erwähnen: [Exkommunikation](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/exkommunikation/), die der gute [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) John gegen jene Missetäter schleuderte, die gestohlen haben. Was? [Nichts](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/nichts/) anderes als das päpstliche [Pferd](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/pferd/), auf dem [der Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/der-papst/) durch [Frankreich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frankreich/) reiste. Oder diese andere päpstliche Attacke gegen die „Schurken“, die während seines Aufenthalts in der Abtei von Avigny seinen Teller gestohlen hatten. Und, sagte [der Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/der-papst/), um die Verletzung noch zu beleidigen, „wahrscheinlich mit der Duldung der Mönche der Abteien.  
879 erkannte er die Wiedereinsetzung von Photius als legitimen [Patriarchen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/patriarchen/) von Konstantinopel an; Photius war 869 von [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Adrian II. Verurteilt worden. Infolgedessen sprach sich [Johannes](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/johannes/) VIII. Dafür aus, das [Glaubensbekenntnis](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/glaubensbekenntnis/) [ohne das](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ohne-das/) Filioque zu rezitieren. Im Jahr 878 krönte John Louis II, [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) von [Frankreich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frankreich/). Er krönte [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) zwei römische Kaiser: Karl II und Karl III.
