In die [Familie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/familie/) des heidnischen Priesters hineingeboren, beansprucht er die „Grafen von Tusculum“. Alle Behauptungen, er sei Mitglied des katholischen oder sogar christlichen [Klerus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/klerus/), sind eine Fiktion, die vom römischen Kult erst im 12. Jahrhundert erfunden wurde.  
Die empörende Behauptung der römischen Kulthistoriker, Formosus habe Karl den Kahlen, den [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) von [Frankreich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frankreich/), vom [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) gekrönt, ist außerordentlich dreist, wenn man bedenkt, dass die Grafen von Tusculum Heiden waren, die der [Verehrung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/verehrung/) der Magna Mater (Cybele) und Sterblichen gewidmet waren Feinde der arroganten karolongischen „katholischen“ Führer, die für ihre neue [Religion](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/religion/) den Papsttitel annahmen.  
Als Ludwig II. 876 starb, hinterließ er ein Machtvakuum im gesamten Frankenreich. Der katholische [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Adrian II. Überlebte nicht lange danach und die Kirchenstaaten wurden erneut in Aufruhr versetzt.  
Während dieser [Zeit](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zeit/) übernahmen es die verschiedenen lombardischen [Fürsten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/fuersten/), die es geschafft hatten, ihre Titel und Ländereien zu behalten, indem sie weiterhin ihre Verbindungen zwischen byzantinischen, muslimischen und katholischen Invasoren wechselten, für das [Recht](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/recht/) zu kämpfen, sich [selbst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/selbst/) als Könige von [Italien](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/italien/) und Kaiser des Heiligen Römischen Reiches zu bezeichnen.  
In dieser [Zeit](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zeit/) gab es [absolut](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/absolut/) keine katholischen Päpste, da die heidnischen Hohepriester von Magna Mater (Cybele) ihre Ansprüche und Kontrolle über [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) fest etablierten.  
Guy II. Von Spoleto war der erste, der die Blockade zwischen kriegführenden lombardischen [Fürsten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/fuersten/) durchbrach. In einer brillanten Tat überzeugte Guy 891 Formosus, den gegenwärtigen heidnischen Hohepriester (Pontifex [Maximus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/maximus/)) und [Ahnen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ahnen/) der Kolonna, dazu, (zumindest äußerlich) zu einem nominell katholischen [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) zu konvertieren und damit katholische Könige und Kaiser zu krönen .  
Ob Formosus tatsächlich zum [Christentum](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/christentum/) konvertiert ist oder nicht, steht noch zur Debatte. Sicher ist, dass Guy 892 in einer feierlichen Zeremonie in [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) vom „[Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/)“ Formosus zum [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) von [Italien](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/italien/) und zum katholischen Kaiser gekrönt wurde.  
Weder die [Herrschaft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/herrschaft/) von Guy noch Formosus waren so lange wie es scheint, er wurde von anderen Mitgliedern seiner heidnischen [Familie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/familie/) von alten Priestern ermordet, und zwar nicht später als 896.  
Kein anderer Graf von Tusculum scheint Formosus gefolgt zu [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/), um sich nominell als Christ zu bezeichnen, bis Pontifex [Maximus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/maximus/) [Gregor](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gregor/) VII. 1057.  
Am bekanntesten ist Formosus jedoch für die Cadavar-Synode in [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/), die angeblich nicht mehr als neun Monate nach seinem [Tod](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/tod/) stattgefunden haben soll. [Auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) [dies](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/dies/) ist ein vorsätzlicher und lächerlicher [Betrug](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/betrug/), denn 897 waren die Grafen von Tusculum wieder fest in der [Aufgabe](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/aufgabe/), Hochpriester (Pontifex [Maximus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/maximus/)) des Cybele-Kultes im [Vatikan](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/vatikan/) zu opfern.  
In der Tat ereignete sich die berühmte Cadavar-Synode, in der der [Leichnam](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/leichnam/) von Formosus exhumiert und vor [Gericht](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gericht/) gestellt wurde, mit ziemlicher Sicherheit, da es ernst war, seine [Autorität](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/autoritaet/) als Anti-Pope abzulehnen und daher den Herzögen von Spoleto jeglichen späteren Titel und jede Position als falsche Könige zuzuerkennen und Kaiser. [Dies](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/dies/) war jedoch [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) während der Regierungszeit von [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Clemens (1084-1100) almosy, als die [katholische Kirche](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/katholische-kirche/) [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) schließlich wieder eroberte.
