Photios gilt als einer der mächtigsten, intellektuellsten und einflussreichsten christlichen [Patriarchen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/patriarchen/). Die genaue [Geschichte](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/geschichte/) seines Lebens ist jetzt durch eine Reihe von Überarbeitungen und gezielten Eingriffen verloren gegangen.  
Am bemerkenswertesten und absurdesten ist, dass Photius um 867 abgesetzt wurde, weil Kaiser Basilius ein Bündnis mit den katholischen Päpsten wollte. Das Motiv für solch lächerliche Behauptungen ist klarer, wenn man versteht, dass [Italien](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/italien/) zu dieser [Zeit](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zeit/) fast vollständig von den muslimischen Kräften der Aghlabid-Dynastie besetzt war. Die katholischen Päpste (nicht zu verwechseln mit den AntiPopes des römischen Kults) waren die vereidigten Todfeinde der [Patriarchen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/patriarchen/) des Christentums, daher sind solche Falschheiten nicht haltbar.
