Er wurde 1563 in [Venedig](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/venedig/) geboren, nicht weit von [Bologna](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bologna/) entfernt, wo das [Konzil von Trient](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konzil-von-trient/) seine Vollsitzung hatte, nachdem er aus Platzgründen aus Trient umgezogen war. Mit 20 Jahren trat er 1583 in die [Gesellschaft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gesellschaft/) ein, deren Ruf mit über 10.000 Mitgliedern und mehr als 400 Hochschulen in ganz [Europa](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/europa/) enorm war.  
Nach seiner [Ausbildung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ausbildung/) in der [Gesellschaft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gesellschaft/) unterrichtete er [Philosophie und Theologie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/philosophie-und-theologie/). Nach 10 Jahren wurde er Rektor des English [College](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/college/), was ihn möglicherweise später als General dazu veranlasste, England zu einer eigenen Provinz zu machen und ein Noviziat in London zu gründen. Schließlich wurde er Provinzial von [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) und dann von Neapel und 1608 Assistent für [Italien](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/italien/).  
Nach dem [Tod](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/tod/) von [Aquaviva](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/aquaviva/) wurde die 7. Generalkongregation für den 5. November 1615 einberufen und sollte bis zum 6. Januar 1616 dauern. Am 15. November 1615 wurde der 51-jährige Vitelleschi zum 6. General der [Gesellschaft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gesellschaft/) gewählt.  
Er wurde oft für seine milde [Herrschaft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/herrschaft/) kritisiert, dennoch wuchs die [Gesellschaft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gesellschaft/) auf über 16.000 Mitglieder und 35 Provinzen.  
Im Jahr 1619 genehmigte General Vitelleschi die Ernennung des von den [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) ausgebildeten Jan Pieterszoon Coen zum Generalgouverneur der VOC ([Duty](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/duty/) East India Company) (1618-1629).  
Die [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) versuchten, den Status quo des Bürgerkriegs innerhalb Japans zu ihrem Vorteil beizubehalten, doch 1639 gelang es dem japanischen Führer Tokugawa, die kriegführenden Fraktionen zu vereinen, als Shogun die [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) prompt vertrieb.  
Nach 29 Jahren und 3 Monaten als General verstarb er am 9. Februar 1645 im [Alter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/alter/) von 82 Jahren. Vincenzo Carafa (1645-1649) trat die Nachfolge als Generaloberer an.
