# Mezezius (668-669 A.D.)

Als [Constans II](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/constans-ii/). Nach Sizilien reiste, wurde er von Patrikios und Komes des Opsikion [Mezezius](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mezezius/) begleitet. [Mezezius](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mezezius/) (Mzez) war ein armenischer Abkömmling des fürstlichen Gnuni-Hauses. Die [schwere](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/schwere/) finanzielle [Belastung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/belastung/), die Sizilien auferlegt wurde, um die Anwesenheit des Kaisers zu unterstützen, führte zu einem abrupten Rückgang der lokalen Unterstützung für Constans. Am 15. September 668 während des Badens wurde Constans von einem Cubicularius ermordet, und [Mezezius](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mezezius/) wurde zum Kaiser erklärt. Unglücklicherweise konnte er für [Mezezius](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mezezius/) weder von der lokalen [Bevölkerung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bevoelkerung/) noch von den kaiserlichen Truppen Unterstützung erhalten. Die Revolte sollte kurzlebig [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) und war in ein paar kurzen Monaten vorbei. Das [Ende](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ende/) des Aufstands von [Mezezius](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mezezius/) ist jedoch nicht ohne historische Kontroversen. Viele Gelehrte akzeptieren die [Geschichte](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/geschichte/), die Theophanes der Bekenner (ein [Historiker](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/historiker/) des achten Jahrhunderts) in seiner [Geschichte](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/geschichte/) aufzeichnete. In Chronographia 352,4-7 berichtet Theophanes, dass [Konstantin IV](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konstantin-iv/)., Sohn und Erbe [Constans II](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/constans-ii/)., Persönlich eine militärische Truppe versammelte und nach Sizilien reiste, wo er [Mezezius](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mezezius/) und die Verantwortlichen für den Mord an seinem Vater gefangen nahm und hingerichtete. Eine kleinere [Gruppe](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gruppe/) von Historikern akzeptiert die Version in der Liber pontificalis (eine päpstliche [Geschichte](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/geschichte/) von Peter bis zum neunten Jahrhundert). In 1.346 heißt es, dass Truppen aus [Italien](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/italien/) und [Afrika](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/afrika/) kurz nach der Ermordung von Constans eintrafen und die Revolte schnell unterdrückten. Nachdem sie [Mezezius](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mezezius/) ausgeführt hatten, schickten sie seinen [Kopf](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kopf/) nach [Konstantin IV](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konstantin-iv/). In Konstantinopel, um ihre Loyalität zu demonstrieren.
