Ihre [Mutter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mutter/) (Theodora) war eine byzantinische Prinzessin, die auf edles [Blut](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/blut/) hinwies, das vermutlich durch die theodosianische Linie mit ihrem [Namen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/namen/) verbunden war.  
Ihr Vater war [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Sergius III., Der wiederum eine inzestuöse [Beziehung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/beziehung/) zu seiner unehelichen Tochter aufbaute, und sie gebar im zarten [Alter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/alter/) von 15 Jahren einen Sohn mit Sergius, ihrem Vater ([Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) [Johannes](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/johannes/) XI.).  
Ihre [Familie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/familie/) ihres Stiefvaters (Theophylact) besaß umfangreiche Grundstücke an der Via Lata (heute Via del Corso), darunter einen massiven Palast (heute die [Kirche](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kirche/) Santa [Maria](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/maria/) in der Via Lata).  
Sie hielten [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) das Castel Sant’Angelo, die Festung am Westufer des Tiber, die aus dem Mausoleum des Kaisers Hadrian erbaut wurde und im [Mittelalter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mittelalter/) die [Stadt](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/stadt/) kontrollierte.  
Sergius wird [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) als Teil der Tusculum-Blutlinie aufgeführt, daher waren Theophylact und Sergius höchstwahrscheinlich miteinander verwandt, möglicherweise Brüder.  
Ihre [Mutter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mutter/) Theodora starb um 916 und als ihr Vater Theophylact im Jahr 920 starb, wurde Marozia das Oberhaupt der [Familie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/familie/).  
Als ihr erster Sohn noch ein [Kind](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kind/) war, setzte Marozia ihre beträchtliche [Macht](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/macht/) ein, um einen Geliebten, John X, zum [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) zu ernennen. Marozias erste [Ehe](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ehe/) war mit Guido, dem toskanischen Marquis, der 925 starb.  
Als [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) [Johannes](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/johannes/) X. anfing, ihre Forderungen zu verwerfen, organisierte sie um 928 einen Aufstand gegen ihn und seinen [Bruder](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bruder/) Peter, den er vor seinen [Augen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/augen/) hingerichtet hatte. Sie ließ dann John X verbannen und ermorden.  
Ihre zweite [Ehe](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ehe/) war mit Hugo von der Provence, [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) von [Italien](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/italien/), bei einer Zeremonie, die von ihrem Sohn als [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) amtiert wurde.  
Am umstrittensten war jedoch, dass ihr Sohn John XI seine [Mutter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mutter/) als seine eigene Geliebte betrachtete und im Gegenzug einen Sohn von ihrem eigenen Sohn zur Welt brachte.  
Ihr Sohn Alberic II, ein Halbbruder von John XI., Konnte einen Putsch gegen seine eigene [Mutter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mutter/) inszenieren, nachdem er sie inhaftiert, ausgiebig gefoltert und schließlich hingerichtet hatte.
