Luis wurde am 19. August 1846 als Sohn von Clemente und Francisca Garcia von Melgar in Kastilien, Spanien, geboren. Er trat am 13. Oktober 1864 im [Alter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/alter/) von 18 Jahren in die [Gesellschaft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gesellschaft/) ein und machte [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Noviziat in Loyola in Spanien. Er studierte [Philosophie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/philosophie/) in Vals in [Frankreich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frankreich/) und wurde am 24. September 1876 von [Bischof](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bischof/) Juan Camillo Fonteneau, [Bischof](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bischof/) von [Agen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/agen/), [Frankreich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frankreich/), ordiniert. Seine erste [Messe](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/messe/) feierte er im Heiligtum von Lourdes, das zu dieser [Zeit](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zeit/) gerade erst seinen Ruhm erlangte. Er wurde Rektor, dann Provinzial von Kastilien und Unterstaatssekretär der [Gesellschaft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gesellschaft/). Nach Anderledy’s [Tod](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/tod/) war die politische Situation so angespannt, dass [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Leo XIII. vorschlug, dass die Generalkongregation, die man als Generalkongregation bezeichnen sollte, irgendwo außerhalb Italiens stattfinden sollte. Der Generalvikar hielt es für angemessen, dass er in Loyola, Spanien, abgehalten wird.  
Die 24. Generalkongregation fand also vom 24. September bis zum 5. Dezember 1892 in Spanien statt. Der Generalvikar, Luis Martin, wurde am 2. Oktober 1892 im [Alter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/alter/) von 48 Jahren zum General gewählt. Die [Kongregation](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kongregation/) empfahl [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/), dass der General und die [Kurie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kurie/) von Fiesole nach [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) zurückkehren sollten. Im Januar 1895 wurde [dies](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/dies/) getan und die [Kurie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kurie/) nahm ihren Wohnsitz im Deutschen Kollegium. Beckx hatte [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) 22 Jahre zuvor verlassen, aber inzwischen hatte sich das politische und religiöse Klima so verändert, dass eine Rückkehr gerechtfertigt war.  
Martin war ein [Mann](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mann/) mit großen [Ideen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ideen/) und einer seiner herausragendsten war das [Schreiben](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/schreiben/) der endgültigen [Geschichte](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/geschichte/) der [Gesellschaft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gesellschaft/) von ihren Ignatianischen Anfängen an unter Verwendung aller verfügbaren Dokumente. Aus diesem Projekt wurde die berühmte Monumenta Historica, die sich in dieser [Schrift](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/schrift/) aus über 150 dicken Bänden zusammensetzt, die von [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) verfasst wurden, die in ihren Fachgebieten kompetent sind. Er ermutigte [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) anderer Länder, die [Geschichte](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/geschichte/) ihrer Provinzen zu [schreiben](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/schreiben/), was zeitweise so energisch geschah, dass diese Geschichten nun viel Platz in den Regalen der Jesuitenhausbibliotheken einnehmen.  
Martin starb am 18. April 1906 im [Alter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/alter/) von 60 Jahren und einem Generalat von 13 Jahren und 6 Monaten. [Sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Nachfolger als Generaloberer wurde Franz Xavier Wernz (1906-1914).
