# Leontius (695-98 A.D.)

Isonianischer Herkunft, war [Leontius](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/leontius/) ein sehr effizienter militärischer Führer und diente kompetent unter mehreren Kaisern. Constantine IV ernannte ihn zum Strategen von Anatolikon. [Justinian](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/justinian/) II. Schickte ihn im Jahr 686 zu einem Feldzug gegen die [Araber](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/araber/) in [Armenien](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/armenien/) und Georgien. Als er die arabischen Plünderer besiegte, kämpfte [Leontius](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/leontius/) erfolgreich in Aserbaidschan und [Albanien](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/albanien/), sammelte [Beute](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/beute/) und erlangte einen Ruf für [Grausamkeit](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/grausamkeit/). Diese Kampagne überzeugte den Kalifen cAbd al-Malik, seinen Vertrag mit den Byzantinern, die ursprünglich unter [Konstantin IV](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konstantin-iv/). Unterzeichnet worden waren, mit günstigeren Bedingungen für das Byzantinische [Reich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/reich/) zu erneuern. Der Kalif erklärte sich bereit, die Einkünfte aus [Armenien](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/armenien/), Iberien und Zypern zu teilen und die jährlichen Tributzahlungen an die Byzantiner zu erhöhen. Mit Unterstützung der Blauen Fraktion und des [Patriarchen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/patriarchen/) [Callinicus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/callinicus/) ergriffen [Leontius](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/leontius/) und seine Anhänger [Justinian](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/justinian/) II. Und erklärten [Leontius](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/leontius/) zum Kaiser. [Leontius](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/leontius/) hatte Justinians Nase und Zunge aufschlitzten und ihn nach Cherson auf der Krim verbannt.

Im Jahr 696 konnte cAbd al-Malik, ermutigt durch [Leontius](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/leontius/) ‚offenkundigen Mangel an Aggressivität, einen Angriff auf das byzantinische [Afrika](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/afrika/) initiieren, das im Jahr 697 zur Eroberung Karthagos führte. Aus [Angst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/angst/) vor der Empörung des Kaisers über ihr Scheitern empörte sich eine [Gruppe](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gruppe/) von Offizieren, setzte [Johannes](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/johannes/) [ab](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ab/) und proklamierte den Kaiser der Cibyrrhäots, Apsimar, zum Kaiser. Apsimar sammelte eine Flotte und segelte nach Konstantinopel, das von der Beulenpest heimgesucht wurde. Die [Stadt](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/stadt/) widerstand der Belagerung für mehrere Monate, bevor 698 die Tore für die [Rebellen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rebellen/) geöffnet wurden. Apsimar, der den [Namen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/namen/) Tiberius II. Trug, hatte [Leontius](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/leontius/) ‚Nase aufgeschlitzt und ihn im Kloster Psamathion in Konstantinopel gefangen gehalten. Als [Justinian](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/justinian/) II. Im Jahr 705 wieder an die [Macht](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/macht/) kam, ließ er [Leontius](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/leontius/) durch die [Stadt](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/stadt/) ziehen, bevor er enthauptet wurde.
