Oliva stammte aus Genua und war 1616 in den Verein eingetreten. Er war Rektor des Deutschen Kollegs, Novizenmeister und ein hervorragender Prediger. Zu seinen Gunsten und zum Wohle der [Gesellschaft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gesellschaft/) [stand](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/stand/) er [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) mit vier Päpsten in einem guten Verhältnis.  
Neun Jahre waren seit der letzten Generalkongregation vergangen – der 10. – und so wurde die 11. [Kongregation](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kongregation/) vom 9. Mai 1661 bis zum 27. Juli einberufen. Die Delegierten hatten ein Problem. Nickel, der 80 Jahre [alt](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/alt/) war, war ernsthaft handlungsunfähig und hatte oft nach einem Vikar gefragt. [Der Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/der-papst/) wurde gebeten, die Delegierten zu ermächtigen, einen Vikar zu ernennen, der das [Recht](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/recht/) auf Nachfolge hat und der sofort mit den vollen Befugnissen eines Generals handeln kann. Am 7. Juni 1661 wurde Oliva zum Vikar gewählt. Die [Historiker](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/historiker/) [Astrain](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/astrain/) und Bangert [sagen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sagen/) beide, Nickel sei „nur im [Namen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/namen/) [allgemein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/allgemein/): Oliva im [Namen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/namen/)“. Nickel lebte in dieser Situation weitere drei Jahre und wurde schließlich älter, und ein sehr kranker [Mann](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mann/) gab seine [Seele](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/seele/) seinem Schöpfer preis. Oliva, der in der letzten [Kongregation](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kongregation/) zum Vikar mit [Erbrecht](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/erbrecht/) gewählt worden war, übernahm nun seine komplette Funktion als General.  
Während der siebzehn Jahre und vier Monate seines Generalats war [Europa](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/europa/) kein friedlicher Ort und Olivas [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) und ihre Werke waren in ständiger Gefahr. Der Dreißigjährige [Krieg](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/krieg/) wurde immer noch geführt; Ludwig XIV. Befand sich in Versailles auf dem französischen Thron zum Ruhm Frankreichs und zum [Elend](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/elend/) der übrigen Welt. Katholiken wurden wegen eines angeblichen Versuchs, das Parlamentsgebäude in London in die [Luft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/luft/) zu sprengen, verfolgt und verurteilt.  
Aber er hatte [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) einige tröstende Momente. Das [Heilige](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/heilige/) [Herz](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/herz/) war einer Nonne in [Frankreich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frankreich/) erschienen, deren Beichtvater ein Jesuit war. Die [Kirche](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kirche/) des Hl. Ignatius wurde schließlich 1642 zur Bewunderung aller fertiggestellt. Die Dekoration der Gesí und der Noviziatskirche des Hl. Andrea al Quirinale erfolgte zur [Zufriedenheit](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zufriedenheit/) ihres Architekten Bernini, der ein enger Freund von Oliva war.  
Oliva starb am 26. November 1681 nach 17 Jahren und vier Monaten als General. Er wurde von Charles de Noyelle (1682 – 1686) als Generaloberer abgelöst.
