Francesco Borja ([auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) bekannt als Borga und Borgia) Geboren in der Nähe von Gandia, Valencia, als Sohn von Juan de Borja, dem 3. Herzog von Gandia und Joana von [Aragon](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/aragon/), der Tochter von Afonso de [Aragon](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/aragon/), dem Erzbischof von Saragossa, der seinerseits die unehelicher Sohn von Ferdinand dem Katholiken (Ferdinand II von [Aragon](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/aragon/)) und seiner Geliebten Aldonza Ruiz de Iborra y Alemany. Franziskus war [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) der Urenkel väterlicherseits von [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) [Alexander VI](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/alexander-vi/).  
Als [Kind](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kind/) wurde er an den Hof von Kaiser Karl V. geschickt. Im September 1526, im [Alter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/alter/) von 16 Jahren, war er mit Eleanor de Castro Melo e Menezes von portugiesischem [Adel](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/adel/) verheiratet. Zusammen hatten sie [acht](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/acht/) Kinder: Carlos 1530, Isabel 1532, Juan 1533, Álvaro um 1535, Juana ebenfalls um 1535, Fernando 1537, Dorotea 1538 und Alfonso 1539.  
Er wurde zum Vizekönig von Katalonien ernannt und nach dem [Tod](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/tod/) seines Vaters zum Herzog von Gandia.  
Die Borja war zwar wohlhabend und in der Lage, hatte aber innerhalb der päpstlichen Machtkorridore immer mehr an Einfluss verloren, insbesondere seit der berüchtigten Veröffentlichung des epischen Gedichts The Divine Comedy (1316) von [Dante Alighieri](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/dante-alighieri/) und der Verleumdung der Borja als Teil der achten Kreis der [Hölle](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/hoelle/) und bemerkenswerte Mitglieder, die [Luzifer](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/luzifer/) dienen.  
Die Verwendung des extrem esoterischen und seltenen Wortes [Luzifer](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/luzifer/) als Name der höchsten Dämonengottheit durch [Dante](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/dante/) war faszinierend und provokativ, da die zu dieser [Zeit](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zeit/) gebräuchlichsten [Namen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/namen/) The [Devil](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/devil/), [Satan](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/satan/) und [Beelzebub](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/beelzebub/) waren. Borja lernte Loyola zum ersten Mal durch die Verschwörung kennen, [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Clemens VII. Und Kaiser Karl V. zu töten. 1537 reiste Borgia mit den [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) persönlich nach [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/), nachdem Loyola und seine Band aus [Venedig](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/venedig/) zurückgekehrt waren, um [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Paul III. Zu besuchen. Drei Jahre lang wurden die [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) offiziell als spezieller „Militärorden“ der katholischen [Kirche](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kirche/), dem Bullen Regimini militantis (27. September 1540), anerkannt. Sie sind eine militärische Organisation geblieben, die diesem ersten päpstlichen Bullen treu geblieben ist.  
Nach dem [Tod](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/tod/) seiner [Frau](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frau/) Eleanor im Jahr 1546 war Borja verstärkt an der Strukturierung und dem [Betrieb](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/betrieb/) seines neuen Ordens mit Ignatius beteiligt. Borja war maßgeblich an der Unterstützung der Jesuitenmissionen im [Osten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/osten/) und der Gründung der 1. Jesuitenmission und der Sklavenplantage von São Paulo im Jahr 1554 und später des Sklavenhafens und der Plantage von Rio de Janeiro im Jahr 1565 durch [Emanuel](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/emanuel/) Nóbrega S.J. und [Joseph Anchieta](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/joseph-anchieta/), S.J. mit Jesuitenmiliz.  
Als sich der Gesundheitszustand von Ignatius dramatisch verschlechterte, beschloss Francis Borja, der nächste Generaloberer des Ordens zu [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/), dessen Gründung er unterstützte.  
1554 kündigte er an, sich [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) den [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) anzuschließen, und wurde von [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Julius II. Prompt zum [Kardinal](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kardinal/) ernannt. Die Ereignisse begünstigten jedoch nicht [Kardinal](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kardinal/) Francis Borja. Ignatius starb im Juli 1556 unter Giovanni Pietro Carafa als [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Paul IV. (1555-1559). Carafa war einer der größten Feinde von Borja [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) [Alexander VI](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/alexander-vi/). Und ernannte sofort Diego Laynez (James Lainez) zum Generaloberen.  
[Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Paul IV. Starb im August 1559 und wurde durch Giovanni Angelo de Medici ([Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Pius IV.) Ersetzt. In beiden Fällen richtete sich Generaloberer Diego Laynez eng zusammen und machte ihn praktisch unantastbar.  
Nachdem jedoch [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Pius IV. Benedetto [Accolti](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/accolti/) und andere Mitglieder der päpstlichen [Familie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/familie/) in einer angeblich gescheiterten Verschwörung zusammengetrieben und gefoltert und ermordet hatte, machte [Kardinal](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kardinal/) Borja seinen Schritt und Pius IV. Wurde am 9. Dezember 1565 zu Tode vergiftet. Einige Tage später, Oberer General Diego Laynez erlebte dasselbe [Schicksal](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/schicksal/) und bald nach der einstimmigen [Wahl](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/wahl/) von [Kardinal](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kardinal/) Francis Borja wurde er zum dritten Generaloberen gewählt.  
Borja stärkte die bereits beträchtlichen Befugnisse des Generaljesuiten, um größer zu [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) als jeder andere [Orden](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/orden/) in der [Geschichte](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/geschichte/) der katholischen [Kirche](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kirche/). Tatsächlich sind es diese Gesetze der [Verfassung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/verfassung/) des Jesuitenordens, die dazu geführt haben, dass der Generaloberste als Schwarzer [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) bekannt wurde.  
Ähnlich wie [der Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/der-papst/) konnte der Generaloberste der [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) jetzt [Priester](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/priester/) und neue Rekruten von [all](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/all/) ihren Sünden befreien, sogar von der Sünde der Häresie und des Schismas, der Fälschung apostolischer Schriften. Darüber hinaus hatten die Generaloberen [ab](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ab/) Borja die „offizielle“ Befugnis von Papal Bull und seiner [Satzung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/satzung/), Exkommunikations-, Suspendierungs- oder Verbotsstrafen aufzuheben und sogar Jesuitenpriester, die des Mordes und der Bigamie schuldig sind, freizulassen.  
Einer der beeindruckendsten Siege des Generaloberen Borja war jedoch die Sicherung des Handels- und Bankrechts der [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) unter [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) [Gregor](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gregor/) XIII. Im Jahr 1572 – ein [Recht](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/recht/), das seit den Rittern keinem religiösen [Orden](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/orden/) der katholischen [Kirche](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kirche/) zuerkannt worden war [Templer](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/templer/) vor vierhundert Jahren.  
Borja starb im selben Jahr 1572 und gilt als Heiliger der katholischen [Kirche](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kirche/).
