# Flavius Basiliscus (AD 475-476) **[View attachment 1470](https://investigatione.srvdns.de/xeno/index.php?attachments/1470/) Hugh Elton** Florida International University Flavius [Basiliscus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/basiliscus/) war der [Bruder](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bruder/) von Verina, [Leo I](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/leo-i/) Witwe und kam wahrscheinlich aus dem [Balkan](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/balkan/). (1) Er war mit Zenonis verheiratet und sie hatten einen Sohn, [Marcus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/marcus/). [Basiliscus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/basiliscus/) hatte eine Militärkarriere unter Leo und erreichte 465 das Konsulat. Neben den Kämpfen auf dem [Balkan](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/balkan/) führte er 478 die katastrophale Expedition gegen die Vandalen und 471 den Putsch gegen Aspar. Nach dem [Beitritt](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/beitritt/) von [Zeno](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zeno/) 474 Verina begann gegen ihn zu streiten, um ihn durch ihren [Bruder](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bruder/) zu ersetzen. Mit Unterstützung von Theoderic Strabo, Illus und seinem Neffen Armatus wurde [Basiliscus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/basiliscus/) am 9. Januar 475 als [Augustus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/augustus-2/) gefeiert. [Zeno](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zeno/) floh nach Isaurien, wo er von basistreuen Truppen verfolgt wurde. Trotz eines starken Anfangs verlor [Basiliscus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/basiliscus/) schnell die Unterstützung in der Hauptstadt. Er war gezwungen, starke finanzielle Auflagen zu machen, um den [Krieg](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/krieg/) gegen [Zeno](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zeno/) zu unterstützen. Dann erteilte er 475 eine Anti-Chalkedonische [Enzyklika](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/enzyklika/). Dadurch verlor er 476 die Unterstützung der Constantinopolitanischen [Kirche](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kirche/) und der [Bevölkerung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bevoelkerung/). Er exekutierte Patricius, den Magister Officiorum, mit dem seine Schwester eine Affäre hatte, und veranlaßte sie, Anträge zu stellen [Zeno](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zeno/). [Basiliscus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/basiliscus/) konnte [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) die Versprechen, die er Illus und Armatus gemacht hatte, nicht einhalten. Schließlich gab es ein schweres [Feuer](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/feuer/) in der [Stadt](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/stadt/) 475/6. Bei einer so beklagenswerten Lage in Konstantinopel verwundert es nicht, dass der Exilkaiser im Zuge der Operationen gegen Zenon Armatus und Illus von ihrer [Treue](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/treue/) gegen [Basiliscus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/basiliscus/) loslösen konnte. Im August 476 marschierte [Zeno](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zeno/) auf Konstantinopel. Als sie [Ende](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ende/) August dort ankamen, war [Zeno](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zeno/) in der Lage, die durch die [Enzyklika](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/enzyklika/) [Basiliscus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/basiliscus/) verursachten Spannungen auszunutzen, um ihn ohne Kampf von der [Macht](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/macht/) zu zwingen. [Basiliscus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/basiliscus/) und seine [Familie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/familie/) suchten Zuflucht in einer [Kirche](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kirche/).
