Theodosius, der älteste Sohn von Aelia Eudoxia und Ostkaiser [Arcadius](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/arcadius/), wurde stark von seiner ältesten Schwester Pulcheria beeinflusst, die ihn vom römischen [Christentum](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/christentum/) zum östlichen [Christentum](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/christentum/) verdrängte.  
Pulcheria war die treibende [Kraft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kraft/) hinter dem Kaiser und viele ihrer Ansichten wurden zur offiziellen [Politik](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/politik/). Dazu gehörte ihre antisemitische Sichtweise, die zur Zerstörung der Synagogen führte. Er befahl die Hinrichtung von Gamaliel VI., Der Nasi des jüdischen Sanhedrin, im Jahr 425, um den Bau neuer Synagogen zu genehmigen, und hob das [Amt](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/amt/) auf.  
Nach dem [Tod](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/tod/) seines Vaters [Arcadius](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/arcadius/) im Jahr 408 wurde Theodosius Kaiser. Aufgrund seiner Minderheit übte der Prätorianerpräfekt des Ost-Anthemius jedoch bis zu seiner Entlassung im Jahr 414 wirkliche [Macht](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/macht/) aus. Unter der Aufsicht von [Anthemius](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/anthemius/) wurden die theodosianischen Landmauern von Konstantinopel errichtet.  
Im Juni 421 heiratete Theodosius die Dichterin Aelia Eudocia. Sie hatten eine Tochter, Licinia Eudoxia, deren Heirat mit dem weströmischen Kaiser [Valentinian III](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/valentinian-iii/). Die Wiedervereinigung der beiden Reichshälften bedeutete, wenn [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) nur für kurze [Zeit](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zeit/).
