# Constantine V Copronymus (A.D. 741-775)

**Einführung**  
[Konstantin](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konstantin/) V. ist einer der berüchtigsten byzantinischen Kaiser, aber [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) einer der faszinierendsten. Seine Berühmtheit rührt von der Tatsache her, dass er ein Iconoclast war und daher in ikonophilen [Quellen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/quellen/), die nach seinem [Tod](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/tod/) komponiert wurden, feindselig behandelt wurde, wie die Chronik von Theophanes, das [Leben](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/leben/) von [Stephen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/stephen/) dem Jüngeren und die Antirrhetici des [Patriarchen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/patriarchen/) Nikephoros. Aus Texten wie diesen entpuppt er sich als archetypischer böser Tyrann, mit abfälligen Spitznamen versehen und vor allem wegen seiner brutalen [Behandlung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/behandlung/) von Mönchen berühmt. Trotz dieser einseitigen [Quellen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/quellen/) ist klar, dass es für [Konstantin](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konstantin/) sehr viel mehr gab: Er regierte lange [Zeit](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zeit/), erzielte bemerkenswerte Erfolge gegen die [Araber](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/araber/) und die [Bulgaren](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bulgaren/) und konnte als Präsident eines Goldenen Zeitalters gelten. Ironischerweise vermittelt Nikephoros ‚eigene [Brief](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/brief/) History diesen positiveren Eindruck des Kaisers und nimmt sogar die Ansicht auf, dass Constantine ein „neuer [Midas](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/midas/)“ sei. (1) Zweifellos ist der Kaiser jemand, über den wir gerne mehr erfahren würden, aber wir sind durch die begrenzten und problematischen [Beweise](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/beweise/) eingeschränkt. Die widersprüchlichen [Eindrücke](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/eindruecke/) des Kaisers können uns ein komplexes [Bild](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bild/) des Mannes hinterlassen: Er kann als „hochgespannt“ angesehen werden, aber [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) als ein Individuum, das mit „persönlichem [Magnetismus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/magnetismus/)“ ausgestattet ist. (2)  
**Frühen Lebensjahren**  
Seit seiner [Geburt](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/geburt/) war [Konstantin](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konstantin/) V. an kaiserliches Privileg gewöhnt. Er wurde 718 dem Kaiser [Leo III](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/leo-iii/) (717-741) und seiner [Frau](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frau/) [Maria](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/maria/) geboren und am Weihnachtstag desselben Jahres in der Hagia [Sophia](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sophia/) getauft. Bei dieser Gelegenheit erklärte Constantine angeblich in der [Schrift](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/schrift/), die vom [Patriarchen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/patriarchen/) Germanus als Zeichen seines zukünftigen Bösen angesehen wurde. (3) Ob [Konstantin](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konstantin/) die [Schrift](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/schrift/) verfehlt hat, ist ein strittiger Punkt. Es ist möglich, dass er es tat und dass Germanus ‚Prophezeiung im Nachhinein hinzugefügt wurde, oder die ganze [Geschichte](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/geschichte/) könnte Erfindung [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/). (4) Es scheint sicherer zu [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/), dass [Leo III](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/leo-iii/). Anlässlich der [Taufe](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/taufe/) die Position der Dynastie gestärkt hat; Theophanes berichtet [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/), dass [Maria](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/maria/) [Augusta](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/augusta/) gekrönt wurde, Constantine wurde an elitäre Sponsoren angeschlossen und diese Großzügigkeit wurde verteilt, als [Mutter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mutter/) und [Kind](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kind/) in den Palast zurückkehrten. Innerhalb weniger Jahre festigte Leo die Position seines Sohnes, der ihn am Ostertag 720 krönte. (5) Von [Konstantin](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konstantin/) erfahren wir seit über zehn Jahren [nichts](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/nichts/) mehr, die Gelegenheit war seine Verlobung 732 mit der Tochter des Khazar Chagans, Sie wurde Christin und wurde in Irene umbenannt (750 gab sie [Konstantin](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konstantin/) mit seinem Sohn und Erben Leo IV., der so halb Khazar war). Über diese politische [Ehe](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ehe/) hinaus erweckte Leo Konstantins Profil auf andere Weise: Er verwickelte ihn in seine Feldzüge ([Konstantin](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konstantin/) war 740 in der Schlacht von Akroinos anwesend: Theophanes AM 6231) und in seiner juristischen [Arbeit](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/arbeit/) (Constantine trägt den Titel der Ecloga, die auf 741 datiert ist: Burgmann 1983). Es ist [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) wahrscheinlich, dass sich Constantines Reitleidenschaft in seiner Jugend entwickelte.  
**[Beitritt](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/beitritt/) und Bürgerkrieg**  
Als [Leo III](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/leo-iii/). Am 18. Juni 741 starb, war klar, dass [Konstantin](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konstantin/) [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) beabsichtigter Erbe war. Trotzdem kämpfte er bald für [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) [Recht](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/recht/) zu herrschen, als [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Schwager [Artabasdus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/artabasdus/), der Kommandant des Opsikion-Themas, die [Macht](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/macht/) übernahm. Theophanes präsentiert [Artabasdus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/artabasdus/) als die unschuldige Partei und spielt den Faktor der [Ikonen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ikonen/) auf, aber beide Aspekte seines Berichts können in Frage gestellt werden. Es scheint wahrscheinlicher, dass [dies](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/dies/) ein gewollter Coup war, der von einem starken Kandidaten ins [Leben](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/leben/) gerufen wurde (wie Nikephoros 64 berichtet); [Artabasdus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/artabasdus/) hatte eine bemerkenswerte Karriere, militärische Unterstützung und kaiserlichen Referenzen durch seine [Frau](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frau/) [Anna](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/anna/) (die Tochter von [Leo III](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/leo-iii/) und die Schwester von [Konstantin](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konstantin/) V.), von denen er bereits zwei Söhne, Niketas und Nikephoros hatte. [Artabasdus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/artabasdus/) Usurpation (die über zwei Jahre anhielt) wurde durch seinen Einfluss auf Konstantinopel und seine [Anerkennung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/anerkennung/) durch den [Patriarchen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/patriarchen/) [Anastasios](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/anastasios/) gestärkt; Constantine musste in Amorion Zuflucht [suchen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/suchen/), obwohl er die Unterstützung der Anatolikonen und Thrakischen Armeen sicherte, wobei letztere von seinem Cousin Sisinnios (Theophanes AM 6235) befehligt wurde. In einer Reihe von Kampagnen kam [Konstantin](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konstantin/) besser zurecht und eroberte 743 nach der Belagerung der [Stadt](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/stadt/) Konstantinopel. [Artabasdus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/artabasdus/) und seine Söhne wurden geblendet, aber der [Patriarch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/patriarch/) [Anastasios](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/anastasios/) durfte seine Stellung behalten, nachdem er gedemütigt worden war. ([Konstantin](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konstantin/) hatte die Tendenz, kompromittierte [Patriarchen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/patriarchen/) im [Amt](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/amt/) zu halten, vielleicht als Mittel, sie leichter zu kontrollieren.) Die Blendung von Konstantins Verbündeten Sisinnios scheint eine [Strafe](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/strafe/) für die Verschwörung gegen den Kaiser gewesen zu [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/). **Der [Osten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/osten/)**  
Nachdem seine [Macht](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/macht/) fest etabliert war, konnte Constantine sich wieder auf die [Araber](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/araber/) konzentrieren, mit denen er sich vor dem Ausbruch des Bürgerkriegs auseinandersetzen wollte. Im Jahr 746 fiel er in Syrien ein und eroberte die [Stadt](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/stadt/) Germanikeia. Im Jahr 747 besiegte eine byzantinische Flotte einen arabischen vor Zypern. Im Jahr 752 wagte sich [Konstantin](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konstantin/) nach [Armenien](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/armenien/) und Mesopotamien und besetzte Theodosioupolis und Melitene. Es scheint, dass Konstantins Erfolge durch die Ablenkungen der [Araber](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/araber/) [selbst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/selbst/) unterstützt wurden, wie die Errichtung des Abbasiden-Kalifats, das zu einem Waffenstillstand mit Byzanz geführt zu haben scheint. **Bilderstürmerei**  
Die sesshafteren Bedingungen an der Ostgrenze werden oft als Grund dafür angeführt, warum Constantine sich in den 750er Jahren der Frage der [Ikonen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ikonen/) zuwandte; er hatte jetzt einfach die Möglichkeit. Es wurde jedoch [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) vorgeschlagen, dass die jüngste Plage (746-747) Constantine zum Nachdenken veranlasste und ihn ermutigte, die [Politik](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/politik/) seines Vaters des Ikonoklasmus zu verstärken. (8) Vielleicht könnten andere Faktoren der Verlust von Ravenna an die Langobarden im Jahre 751 [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) (ein Fleck auf Konstantins [Buch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/buch/) und sicherlich eine aktuellere Sorge als die Pest), und das dynastische Vertrauen mit der [Geburt](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/geburt/) seines Sohnes Leo im Jahre 750 erhöht haben und seine Krönung im folgenden Jahr. Was [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) immer die Motivation ist, es besteht kein [Zweifel](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zweifel/) über Constantins persönliches Engagement für den Bildersturm. Um 752 begann der Kaiser, sich für das Publikum in Konstantinopel zu engagieren, und produzierte [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) seine eigenen Traktate über das Thema, die Peuseis („Anfragen“), von denen einige Fragmente überlebt haben. (9) Aber es ist seine [Berufung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/berufung/) eines Rates im Jahr 754 und seine [Entwicklung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/entwicklung/) des Arguments gegen [Ikonen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ikonen/), um die Christologie zu umfassen, für die [Konstantin](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konstantin/) am berühmtesten ist. Der Rat ist bekannt als der Rat von Hiereia (wegen des Ortes, an dem er größtenteils vom 10. Februar bis zum 8. August saß), aber als die „kopflose [Synode](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/synode/)“ von denjenigen, die dagegen waren, da er nicht von einem [Patriarchen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/patriarchen/) geleitet wurde Konstantinopel (der See war wegen des Todes von [Anastasios](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/anastasios/) frei, [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Nachfolger [Konstantin](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konstantin/) wurde vom Kaiser in der letzten Ratssitzung bekanntgegeben) und [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) von keinem anderen [Patriarchen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/patriarchen/) besucht. Trotzdem unterstützten die 338 anwesenden Bischöfe ihre Horos („Definition“), die aufgrund ihrer Erhaltung durch den ikonophilen Rat von Nizäa von 787 erhalten blieben. Der Rat erklärte, dass es unmöglich sei, [Christus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/christus/) in der [Kunst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kunst/) so darzustellen, als sei [dies](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/dies/) ketzerisch. Es wurde [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) argumentiert, dass Bilder der Heiligen und der Theotokos unnötig waren. Diese Sorge um den Kult der Heiligen beschäftigte [Konstantin](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konstantin/) für den Rest seiner Regierungszeit. Es scheint, dass er später auf [Reliquien](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/reliquien/) von Heiligen verzichtete, aber Geschichten, dass er Marias Titel als Theotokos ablehnte, sollten bezweifelt werden, obwohl er von ihrem Kult beunruhigt war. **Die [Bulgaren](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bulgaren/)**  
Während [Konstantin](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konstantin/) während der ersten Hälfte seiner Regierungszeit mit den Arabern und der Ostgrenze beschäftigt war, mußte er sich in der zweiten Hälfte hauptsächlich auf die [Bulgaren](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bulgaren/) und die Nordgrenze konzentrieren. Ironischerweise scheint es, dass es Constantines Sorge um den Zustand Thrakiens war, der Ärger hervorrief; [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Bau der Städte und die Übertragung der [Bevölkerung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bevoelkerung/) von Theodosioupolis und Melitene führten zu einer Steuerforderung der [Bulgaren](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bulgaren/), und seine Weigerung, sie zu zahlen, führte zu Konflikten. (11) Es folgten eine Reihe von Feldzügen (oft zu Land und zu [Wasser](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/wasser/)) (Ostrogorsky (1968) 168 schätzt, dass es mindestens neun Feldzüge auf bulgarischem Territorium gab), unterbrochen durch den [Frieden](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frieden/) und den Rest seiner Regierungszeit verschiedene bulgarische Führer (einschließlich Teletz und Telerig). Theophanes ist negativer über Constantine’s Rekord als Nikephoros, aber es ist immer noch klar, dass der Kaiser 763 große Erfolge in Anchialos und 774 in Lithosoria erzielt hat. Es ist jedoch wahr, dass die Situation zum Zeitpunkt von Constantines [Tod](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/tod/) noch anhielt.  
**Die Mönche**  
Die 760er Jahre erlebten [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) einen der am meisten diskutierten Aspekte der [Regierung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/regierung/) von [Konstantin](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konstantin/) V., seine Verfolgung von Mönchen. Das berühmteste Opfer war [Stephen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/stephen/) der Jüngere (ein Mönch aus Mt. [Auxentios](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auxentios/), der 765 in Konstantinopel zu Tode gefoltert wurde), obwohl es scheint, dass er nicht der Erste oder der Letzte war. Für manche ist die Feindseligkeit des Kaisers gegenüber Mönchen [Ausdruck](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ausdruck/) seiner ikonoklastischen [Politik](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/politik/); Brown hat bekanntlich bemerkt „Iconocachy in [Aktion](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/aktion/) ist monachomachy“. (12) Andere jedoch haben diese einfache Gleichung nicht so schnell geschluckt und auf die durch die [Beweise](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/beweise/) gegebenen Komplikationen hingewiesen. Sicherlich waren nicht alle Mönche Ikonenfreunde, und manche vermuten, dass [Konstantin](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konstantin/) dem Mönchtum als solcher entgegengesetzt war. (13) Aber [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) [dies](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/dies/) erscheint nicht angemessen, da nicht alle Mönche von [Konstantin](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konstantin/) verfolgt wurden, wie der [Fall](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/fall/) von St. Anthousa zeigt. (14) Auzépy schlägt daher vor, dass einige Mönche vom Kaiser gebilligt wurden, während andere nicht, und identifiziert das unterscheidende Merkmal als die [Einstellung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/einstellung/) des Individuums zum [Reich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/reich/). (15) Whittow favorisiert jedoch eine direktere politische Motivation, indem er auf den Kontext der großen Verschwörung gegen [Konstantin](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konstantin/) hinweist, die 766 aufgedeckt wurde und in die der [Patriarch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/patriarch/) [selbst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/selbst/) verwickelt war. (19) Ferner hat [Konstantin](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konstantin/) während seiner Regierungszeit Maßnahmen ergriffen, um die [Bevölkerung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bevoelkerung/) zu stärken, wie Nikephoros und Theophanes klarstellen; er überführte nach seiner Eroberung Germanikeias Syrer nach Byzanz, besetzte Konstantinopel mit Familien aus Griechenland und den Inseln nach der Seuche, übertrug Syrier und Armenier nach [Thrakien](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/thrakien/), besiedelte [Slawen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/slawen/) innerhalb des Reiches und reparierte das Aquädukt von [Valens](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/valens/), das gewesen war gebrochen seit 626. Es scheint jedoch wahrscheinlich, dass die Debatte über Konstantins [Behandlung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/behandlung/) von Mönchen weitergehen wird.  
**Dynastie und [Tod](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/tod/)**  
Wie [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Vater achtete [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) [Konstantin](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konstantin/) auf die [Zukunft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zukunft/) der Dynastie. Gegen [Ende](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ende/) des Jahres 769 versorgte er seinen Sohn Leo mit einer [Frau](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frau/), Irene, die aus Griechenland stammte. Um 771 hatte sie ihrem [Mann](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mann/) einen Sohn, [Konstantin](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konstantin/), zur Verfügung gestellt, dessen Großvater und Namensvetter zweifellos erfreut waren, dass die nächste Generation der Dynastie bereits vor seinem [Tod](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/tod/) angekommen war. Constantine [selbst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/selbst/) hatte sich jedoch nicht mit einem einzigen Zweig des Familienstammbaums (oder mit sexuellen [Beziehungen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/beziehungen/) zu Frauen) zufrieden gegeben: Theophanes AM 6259 erwähnt seine Anziehungskraft auf Strategios, während das [Leben](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/leben/) von [Stephen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/stephen/) the Younger auf seine [Homosexualität](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/homosexualitaet/) hinweist: Auzépy (1997) 232 n 249 und 265 n. 413). Als Irene der Khazar starb, nahm er eine andere [Frau](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frau/), [Maria](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/maria/). Als sie [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) starb, machte er den Schritt, Eudokia zu heiraten, die sehr fruchtbar zu [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) scheint. Mit [Konstantin](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konstantin/) hatte sie fünf Söhne (von Ältesten bis Jüngsten: [Christopher](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/christopher/), Nikephoros, Niketas, Anthimus, Eudocimus), aber [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) mindestens eine Tochter, Anthousa, die Zwillinge von einem der Brüder war. (20) So hatte Leo IV eine Reihe von Halbgeschwistern, und sie würden nicht in den Hintergrund gestellt werden. Während [Ostern](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ostern/) 769 wurde Eudokia [Augusta](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/augusta/) gekrönt, [Christopher](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/christopher/) und Nikephoros wurden Cäsaren und Niketas nobilissimus gemacht. Es scheint, dass Anthimus [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) vor 775 nobilissimus gemacht wurde. (21) So hatte zum Zeitpunkt seines Todes vom [Fieber](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/fieber/) am 14. September 775 während des Feldzuges gegen Bulgarien [Konstantin](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konstantin/) dafür gesorgt, dass das kaiserliche Haus gut gefüllt war.  
**Nachwirkungen**  
Der gemischte Ruf von Constantin V wird durch Episoden nach seinem [Tod](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/tod/) gut demonstriert. Er blieb beliebt bei einigen, wie die Kräfte der Tagmata (die er geschaffen hatte), die den Iconophilenrat von 786 auflösten, und diejenigen, die 813 in das kaiserliche Mausoleum bei Heiligen Aposteln einbrachen und sich vor [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Grab stürzten und ihn anflehten zurückzukehren und das [Reich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/reich/) vor den [Bulgaren](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bulgaren/) zu retten. Doch mit dem Ausbruch des Zweiten Ikonoklasmus wurde [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) [Gedächtnis](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gedaechtnis/) heftig geschmäht, und nach der Wiederherstellung der [Ikonen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ikonen/) im Jahre 843 zerbrach [Michael III](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/michael-iii/). Konstantins Sarkophag und ließ seine sterblichen Überreste in Flammen aufgehen. (22)
