Geboren als Sohn von Tedald (d.1012) und Enkel von Adalbert Azzo. Zu seiner [Geburt](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/geburt/) hatten die [Canossa](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/canossa/) und ihre Milizen ein weites Gebiet in Norditalien, darunter [Brescia](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/brescia/), [Canossa](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/canossa/), Ferrara, Florenz, Lucca, Mantua, Modena, Pisa, Pistoia, Parma, Reggio und Verona.  
Im klassischen [Stil](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/stil/) des lombardischen Kleinadels, der als muslimischer Konvertit unter der italienischen Emirat-Besatzung (847-872) an Bedeutung gewann, wird häufig darauf hingewiesen, dass er den katholischen Kaisern wie Heinrich II. Geholfen haben soll. Angesichts der Tatsache, dass die Canossa-Miliz zu dieser [Zeit](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zeit/) einen Großteil Norditaliens kontrollierte, ist es wahrscheinlich, dass sie im Vertrag einfach anerkannt wurde.  
Ständig im [Krieg](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/krieg/) mit mindestens einem oder mehreren lombardischen Prätendenten (die meisten großen Familien, die gleichzeitig mit den Vasallen der Aghlabiden-Dynastie Emir Muhammad I. Abul-Abbas (841-856) als Muslime an die [Macht](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/macht/) kamen) [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) [Bruder](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bruder/) für die Kontrolle über ihr Land. Die Familienfehde dauerte bis 1027, als es Boniface endlich gelang, seinen [Bruder](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bruder/) zu töten.  
In einer weiteren klassischen Tradition der lombardischen Prätendenten wird behauptet, [Bonifatius](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bonifatius/) habe sich mit den fränkischen Blutlinien vermählt, was einfach Unsinn ist, da die lombardischen „Prinzen“ in dieser [Zeit](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zeit/) [nichts](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/nichts/) weiter als feudale Kriegsherren waren, die sich ständig bekämpften, im Allgemeinen Analphabeten und ungebildet. Es ist klar, dass seine berühmte Tochter Matilda gut ausgebildet war – ein Geschenk, das er wahrscheinlich nie erhalten hat.  
1052 wurden [Bonifatius](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bonifatius/) und der größte Teil seiner [Familie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/familie/) getötet, und nur Matilda soll von den Truppen des katholischen Kaisers Heinrich III. (1028-1056), befohlen von Godfrey III., Herzog von Niederlothringen, überlebt haben.
