Er stammte aus Grizac im Languedoc. Er wurde Benediktiner und Doktor des kanonischen Rechts und unterrichtete in Montpellier und [Avignon](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/avignon/). Er hatte das [Amt](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/amt/) des Abtes von Saint-Victor in Marseille inne; und in [Avignon](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/avignon/).  
In einem außergewöhnlichen Ereignis wurde er nach seiner Rückkehr aus Neapel, wo er als päpstlicher Legat entsandt worden war, nach [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Innozenz VI. (1352–1362) zum [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Urban V. (28. September 1362) gewählt.  
Eine der ersten Aktionen des Papsttums von [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Urban V. bestand darin, mächtige Rivalen für die zeitliche [Souveränität](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/souveraenitaet/) Roms und Italiens zu unterdrücken und auszurotten. 1363 exkommunizierte er Bernabò Visconti, die letzte große Figur der kaiserlichen Partei in Norditalien, die die päpstliche [Stadt](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/stadt/) [Bologna](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bologna/) besetzte und sich tapfer den Truppen von Gil de [Albornoz](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/albornoz/) widersetzte, dem damaligen päpstlichen Militärkommandeur in [Italien](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/italien/).  
Er wurde 1364 durch Kaiser Karl IV. Gezwungen, das Verbot gegen Visconti aufzuheben und erhielt [Bologna](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bologna/) erst nach einer erheblichen Zahlung.  
1367 kam [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Urban V. in [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) an, unterstützt von der päpstlichen und römisch-kaiserlichen Miliz. [Sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Aufenthalt war relativ kurz und entging 1370 den Gefahren Roms, nach [Avignon](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/avignon/) zurückzukehren. Einige Tage später erkrankte er an einer Vergiftung und starb am 19. Dezember 1370.  
Er starb am 19. Dezember 1370 und wurde von [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) [Gregor](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gregor/) XI. (1370-1378) abgelöst.  
**Die meisten bösen Verbrechen**  
Um [Eigentum](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/eigentum/) durch Erpressung zu erlangen (1367), führt die [Kirche](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kirche/) eine Erbschaftssteuer oder eine Erbschaftssteuer ein, die sie zu einem Drittel des Nachlasses des Verstorbenen berechtigt.
