Jacques wurde in Troyes, [Frankreich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frankreich/) geboren.  
Auf dem Ersten [Konzil](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konzil/) von Lyon (1245) machte ihn [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Innozenz IV. (1243-1254) auf zwei Missionen in Deutschland aufmerksam. Eine der Missionen bestand darin, den Vertrag von Christburg zwischen den heidnischen [Preußen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/preussen/) und den Deutschen Rittern auszuhandeln. 1253 wurde er [Bischof](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bischof/) von Verdun. 1255 ernannte ihn [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) [Alexander IV](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/alexander-iv/). (1254-1261) zum [Patriarchen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/patriarchen/) von [Jerusalem](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jerusalem/).  
Er wurde 1241 aus [Jerusalem](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jerusalem/) zurückgerufen und traf [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) [Alexander IV](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/alexander-iv/). In seinem Versteck in Viterbo. Nach einer dreimonatigen Vakanz wurde Pantaléon am 29. August 1261 von den [acht](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/acht/) Kardinälen des Sacred [College](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/college/) als Nachfolger ausgewählt und erhielt den [Namen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/namen/) Urban IV.  
Er starb im Dezember 1264 und wurde von [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Clemens IV. (1265-1268) abgelöst.

Hat [Thomas](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/thomas/) von Aquin 1264 wissentlich und absichtlich persönlich ein Werk namens Thesaurus Graecorum Patrum (Thesaurus der griechischen Väter) zur Verfügung gestellt, in dem er wusste, dass es betrügerisch ist [Zahl](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zahl/) der angeblich echten Zitate früher Zitate von Kirchenvätern, darunter Kyrill von [Jerusalem](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jerusalem/), [Johannes](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/johannes/) Chrysostomus, Kyrill von Alexandrien und [Maximus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/maximus/) der Abt, die erfundene Figuren des Papstes und der katholischen [Kirche](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kirche/) waren, die Aquin damals unwissentlich im großen Glauben an den Text verwendeten sei echtes Teil, um die Grundlage seiner Verteidigung des Papsttums in der [Arbeit](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/arbeit/) gegen die Irrtümer der [Griechen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/griechen/) zu bilden.
