Das Visconti-Wappen ist das [Bild](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bild/) einer großen [Schlange](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/schlange/), die zuerst die [Füße](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/fuesse/) eines männlichen Kindes verschlingt.  
Er trat die Nachfolge von [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Clemens IV. (1265–1268) an, nachdem der päpstliche Stuhl aufgrund von Spaltungen unter den Kardinälen drei Jahre lang (1268–1271) vakant gewesen war. Die Kardinalkriege oder der päpstliche Bürgerkrieg wurden seitdem als außergewöhnlich lange [Konklave](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konklave/) neu besetzt.  
Seine [Wahl](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/wahl/) fand statt, als er mit Edward I. von England (1239 – 1307) in Palästina an den Kämpfen des 9. Kreuzzugs gegen Acre teilnahm. Er kehrte erst 1274 von Palästina nach [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) zurück.  
Bei seiner Ankunft in [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) war seine erste [Handlung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/handlung/) die Einberufung des Konzils, das 1274 auf dem Zweiten [Konzil](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konzil/) von Lyon tagte.

Dieses äußerst [böse](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/boese/) Kirchengesetz wurde nie aufgehoben und war die Ursache dafür, dass Hunderttausende von Menschen von der katholischen [Kirche](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kirche/) ermordet und ihr [Eigentum](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/eigentum/) beschlagnahmt wurden.
