Der gebürtige Alberto de Mora – ein gut ausgebildeter beneventanischer Adliger. Mit der Gründung der Prämonstratenser im Jahr 1126 wurde er Mitglied dieses Ordens und gilt als einziger Prämonstratenser-Papst.  
Ehemals Erzbischof Maurice von Braga, der von Heinrich V. von Deutschland noch gegen die römisch gewählten Päpste eingesetzt wurde. Zuvor war [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Paschal II. Exkommuniziert worden.  
1172 nahm er als päpstlicher Legat am [Konzil](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konzil/) von [Avranches](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/avranches/) teil, das die [Absolution](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/absolution/) Heinrichs II. Von England (1154–1189) von der [Schuld](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/schuld/) an der Ermordung von [Thomas](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/thomas/) Becket (1118–1170) sicherstellte.

Ein grausamer und sadistischer [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/), [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) für seine kurze Regierungszeit. Er versuchte, die anti-päpstliche [Bewegung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bewegung/) der [Republik](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/republik/) [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) zu unterdrücken, indem Oppositionsführer geblendet und mained wurden, damit sie weiterhin als öffentliche Mahnungen gegen Angriffe auf ihn [leben](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/leben/) könnten.  
Seine Aktionen hatten den gegenteiligen Effekt und im Jahr 1187 befestigte ein Mob den Papstpalast, band den [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) auf einem Kamel zurück und führte ihn durch die Straßen Roms, schrie ihn vulgär an und schleuderte ihn mit Steinen, bis er im Dezember 1187 tot war. Ihm folgte [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Clemens III. (1187-1191).
