[Albert](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/albert/) wurde als Sohn des deutschen Königs Rudolf I. von Habsburg und der Gertrud von Hohenburg geboren. [Sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Vater schenkte ihm 1282 im [Alter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/alter/) von 37 Jahren zusammen mit seinem [Bruder](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bruder/) Rudolf II. Die Herzogtümer Österreich und Steiermark. Ein Jahr später erhielt er die alleinige [Regierung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/regierung/) dieser Regionen.  
Nach dem [Tod](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/tod/) seines Vaters im Jahr 1291 gelang es weder [Albert](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/albert/) noch Rudolph, durch Erfolge den Thron zu erobern. Stattdessen überredete Graf Adolf von Nassau die deutschen [Fürsten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/fuersten/), ihn 1292 zum [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) zu wählen, und die Habsburger wurden in ihre von ihren Milizen geschützten Gebiete verbannt.  
1298 gelang es [Albert](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/albert/), einige deutsche [Fürsten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/fuersten/) von seiner Eignung als [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) über den bestehenden [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) Adolf zu überzeugen und sich krönen zu lassen. Die beiden Armeen des Königs und des Antikönigs trafen sich in der Schlacht von Göllheim bei Worms, wo Adolf von [Albert](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/albert/) besiegt und hingerichtet wurde.  
[Albert](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/albert/) ging dann weiter, um seine Position zu festigen. 1299 unterzeichnete er einen Vertrag mit Philipp IV. Von [Frankreich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frankreich/). [Albert](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/albert/) bewegte dann seine [Armee](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/armee/), um zu versuchen, Holland und Zeeland zu erobern, was sich in einen langwierigen und gescheiterten Feldzug verwandelte.  
Im Jahr 1303 bekräftigte [Bonifatius](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bonifatius/) die Position Alberts, indem er die Legitimität seines Königtums anerkannte und im Gegenzug dafür ein Dekret erließ, dass der römische [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) und kein anderer das [Recht](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/recht/) hatte, die Reichskrönung zu verleihen, und versprach, dass keiner seiner Nachkommen ohne ihn zu Königen gewählt werden sollte [Zustimmung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zustimmung/) des Papstes.  
Nach dem [Tod](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/tod/) von [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) Wenzel III. Sicherte [Albert](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/albert/) 1306 die [Krone](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/krone/) Böhmens für seinen Sohn Rudolf. Seine Nachfolgekampagne nach [Ungarn](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ungarn/) scheiterte jedoch 1307 in der Schlacht von Lucka, kurz darauf starb [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Sohn Rudolph.  
Durch das Scheitern in [Ungarn](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ungarn/) geschwächt, setzte [Albert](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/albert/) seine Truppen unter seinem Neffen Herzog Johann von Schwaben dazu an, einen Aufstand in Schwaben niederzuschlagen. [Albert](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/albert/) wurde jedoch von [Johannes](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/johannes/) im Mai 1308 in Windisch an der Reuss ermordet.
