Geboren als viertes von fünf Kindern eines Berufssoldaten und Höflingsbischofs (späterer [Bischof](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bischof/)), Jacques François du Plessis und Susanne de La Porte, ebenfalls von geringerem [Adel](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/adel/).  
Als [Belohnung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/belohnung/) für die [Treue](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/treue/) und den Dienst seines Vaters im Dienste des katholischen Königs Heinrich III. (1574-1589) gegen die [Hugenotten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/hugenotten/) wurde der [Familie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/familie/) durch königliche Genehmigung das Bistum Luçon (Departement Vendée) mit Jacques François du Plessis als [Bischof](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bischof/) verliehen [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) als Soldat.  
1590, als Richelieu gerade fünf Jahre [alt](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/alt/) war, wurde [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Vater während der fortgesetzten französischen Religionskriege getötet. [Sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) [Bruder](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bruder/) François du Plessis wurde dann der nächste [Bischof](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bischof/) von Luçon (1590-1605).  
Im August 1589 wurde [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) Heinrich III. Von dem kurzgewandeten [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) Jacques Clément ermordet, was dazu führte, dass der frühere Hugenot Henry de Bourbon der neue [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) wurde (1589-1610). Wegen der Komplizenschaft der [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) beim [Tod](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/tod/) des Königs erfolgte die erste Vertreibung des Ordens in der [Geschichte](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/geschichte/) von 1589 bis zu ihrer begrenzten Rückkehr im Jahr 1598.  
1594 Im [Alter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/alter/) von 9 Jahren wurde Armand an das [College](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/college/) of Navarre in Paris geschickt, um vor einer wahrscheinlichen militärischen Karriere [Philosophie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/philosophie/) zu studieren. Vier Jahre später erließ [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) Heinrich IV. Von [Frankreich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frankreich/) im April 1598 das berühmte Edikt von Nantes, das [Frankreich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frankreich/) zum ersten säkularen [Staat](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/staat/) in [Europa](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/europa/) machte und den [Hugenotten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/hugenotten/) (kalvinistischen [Protestanten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/protestanten/)) in [Frankreich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frankreich/) wesentliche Rechte einräumte.  
Das Edikt erzürnte den katholischen geistlichen [Adel](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/adel/) wie den de Richelieu und einige der besten und klügsten wurden heimlich angeworben, um als [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) ausgebildet zu werden, darunter Armand de Richelieu und seine Zeitgenossen Nicholas Caussin S.J. und Dennis Petau, S.J.  
1605 starb [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) [Bruder](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bruder/), [Bischof](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bischof/) François du Plessis, und [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) anderer [Bruder](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bruder/), Alphonse-Louis du Plessis de Richelieu, wurde der neue [Bischof](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bischof/) von Luçon. Im selben Jahr verließ Armand de Richelieu Paris, um das Jesuitenkolleg für [Englisch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/englisch/) zu besuchen, um seine [Ausbildung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ausbildung/) zu beenden und [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) letztes Gelübde der [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) abzulegen. Alphonse starb jedoch unerwartet im selben Jahr und die Familienposition des Bischofs war vakant.  
Die Situation der damaligen [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) in [Frankreich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frankreich/) blieb schwierig, obwohl [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) Heinrich IV. Den [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) Peter Coton S.J. als [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Beichtvater – hauptsächlich als Versicherungspolice gegen die Ermordung der [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/). Stattdessen machte Richelieu seinen Abschluss und legte das zusätzliche vierte Gelübde des Jesuiten-Eides [ab](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ab/), um ein kurzgewandeter Jesuit zu werden (Jesuit im Geheimen). Er kehrte 1607 nach Paris zurück, um seinen Familientitel als [Bischof](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bischof/) von Luçon anzunehmen.  
Im Jahr 1614 wurde Richelieu in den Generalstaat gewählt und ein mächtiger Befürworter der Dekrete des Konzils von Trient in ganz [Frankreich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frankreich/) – insbesondere, dass der [Klerus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/klerus/) von den [Steuern](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/steuern/) befreit [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) sollte. Seine Anträge wurden jedoch vom Dritten [Stand](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/stand/) ([Bürger](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/buerger/)) abgelehnt, bis der Generalstaat 1614 endgültig aufgelöst wurde. Daraufhin trat Richelieu in den Dienst von Marie de Médici – [Mutter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mutter/) und Regentin des Kindes, [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) Ludwig XIII. – als Beichtvaterin.  
1616 wurde Richelieu für kurze [Zeit](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zeit/) zum Außenminister ernannt, der [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) für auswärtige Angelegenheiten zuständig war. Weniger als ein Jahr später wurde 1617 Königin Marie de Médici abgesetzt und ihr Ministerpräsident Concino Concini ermordet. Anschließend wurde Richelieu von seinem Posten entlassen und vom [Gericht](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gericht/) nach [Avignon](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/avignon/) verbannt.  
Königin Marie de Médici entkam jedoch 1619 dem Château de [Blois](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/blois/) und führte eine [Gruppe](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gruppe/) von Adligen gegen Charles de Luynes und ihren Sohn Louis XIII. An. Richelieu wurde hastig vor [Gericht](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gericht/) zurückgerufen und war maßgeblich an der Friedensvermittlung zwischen der Königin und ihrem Sohn durch den Vertrag von [Angoulême](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/angouleme/) beteiligt.  
Nach der Vergiftung von Charles de Luynes in Longueville (Guienne) im Dezember 1621 nahmen [Macht](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/macht/) und Einfluss von Richelieu enorm zu – unter anderem wurde er 1622 von [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) [Gregor](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gregor/) XV. Zum [Kardinal](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kardinal/) ernannt.  
Im Jahr 1624 wurde [Kardinal](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kardinal/) Richelieu, nachdem er eine Verschwörung des damaligen Ministerpräsidenten Charles gefälscht hatte, zum Ministerpräsidenten Ludwigs XIII. Ernannt.  
Mehrere französische Adlige – insbesondere die mächtigen [Hugenotten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/hugenotten/), die von der Edit von Nantes geschützt wurden – verdächtigten Richelieu als römischen Doppelagenten. Um ihren Behauptungen entgegenzuwirken, setzte [Kardinal](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kardinal/) Richelieu die Unterstützung der Schweizer [Protestanten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/protestanten/) bei der Verteidigung des französischen Territoriums Veltlin gegen die päpstlichen Streitkräfte mit Bravour ein und gewann protestantische Unterstützung, aber katholischen Verdacht.  
Im Jahr 1626 befahl Richelieu die [Aufhebung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/aufhebung/) der Stellung des Constable von [Frankreich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frankreich/) und die Zerstörung aller befestigten Burgen, mit [Ausnahme](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ausnahme/) der wenigen Burgen, die strategische Verteidigungsmaßnahmen an den Grenzen Frankreichs darstellten. [Sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) [Argument](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/argument/), um diese historische [Aktion](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/aktion/) zu rechtfertigen, bestand darin, einen weiteren „Aufstand“ der Adligen zu verhindern. Mit einem Schlag gelang es Richelieu, den [Adel](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/adel/) Frankreichs dauerhaft zu schwächen – etwas, was der römische Kult vierhundert Jahre lang nicht geschafft hatte.  
Die hugenottischen Adligen weigerten sich, einige ihrer wichtigsten befestigten Hochburgen wie La Rochelle zu zerstören, die als Zufluchtsort unter der [Regierung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/regierung/) von Nantes anerkannt waren. Als Reaktion darauf orchestrierte [Kardinal](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kardinal/) Richelieu persönlich die Belagerung von La Rochelle. Die Verteidiger appellierten an das protestantische Parlament von England, und [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) Karl I. von England war verpflichtet, [Frankreich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frankreich/) den [Krieg](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/krieg/) zu erklären und unterstützende Truppen zu entsenden – was er in möglichst geringer [Zahl](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zahl/) tat und von dem inkompetenten Herzog von Buckingham befohlen wurde. Bis 1628 wurde die englische Truppe vollständig zerstört und La Rochelle wurde gefangen genommen.  
Die Rebellenkräfte des [Hugenotten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/hugenotten/) Henri de Rohan kämpften weiter gegen [Kardinal](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kardinal/) Richelieu, bis sie 1629 nach der Niederlage gezwungen waren, den [Frieden](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frieden/) von Alais zu unterzeichnen und damit die politischen Rechte und den Schutz der [Protestanten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/protestanten/), die zum ersten Mal unter dem Edikt von Nantes gewährt wurden, zu entziehen.  
Im Jahr 1630 gelang es Richelieu, seine frühere Patronin, Königin Marie de Médici, zum letzten Mal ins Exil zu schicken – und so eine mögliche Bedrohung seiner [Macht](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/macht/) für die nächsten 12 Jahre bis zu seinem [Tod](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/tod/) im Jahr 1642 zu beenden.  
Richelieu ist eine der berühmtesten Figuren der [Geschichte](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/geschichte/), dank zahlloser Bücher, Theaterstücke und Filme, in denen er als Bösewicht dargestellt wird, insbesondere in den drei Musketieren von Alexandre Dumas.

Ferdinand wurde in Graz als Sohn von Karl II. Von Österreich (1540-1590) und [Maria](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/maria/) [Anna](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/anna/) von Bayern (1551-1608) geboren und erhielt eine strenge Jesuitenausbildung, die in seinen Studienjahren an der [Universität](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/universitaet/) Ingolstadt ihren Höhepunkt fand.  
Nach Abschluss seines Studiums im Jahr 1595 trat er in [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Erbland ein (wo [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) älterer Cousin, Erzherzog Maximilian III. Von Österreich, 1593-95 als Regent fungierte) und pilgerte nach Loreto und [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/).  
1617 wurde Ferdinand vom böhmischen Landtag zum [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) von Böhmen gewählt. Er sicherte sich [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) die Unterstützung der spanischen Habsburger für seinen [Anspruch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/anspruch/) auf die Nachfolge des kinderlosen Kaisers Matthias auf dem Thron und gewährte ihnen die künftige [Herrschaft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/herrschaft/) über das Elsass und die kaiserlichen Lehen in [Italien](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/italien/). James wurde als zweiter Sohn von Charles I und Henrietta [Maria](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/maria/) von [Frankreich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frankreich/) geboren. Im [Alter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/alter/) von 3 Jahren wurde er zum Ehrentitel Lord High Admiral ernannt.  
Im Jahre 1642, im [Alter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/alter/) von 9 Jahren, wurde James in den [Orden](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/orden/) des Strumpfbandes investiert und zwei Jahre später im Jahre 1644 zum Herzog von York ernannt. Als der [Streit](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/streit/) zwischen dem Parlament in den englischen Bürgerkrieg zerfiel, blieb James in Oxford – einer Hochburg der Royalisten. Als die [Stadt](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/stadt/) 1646 kapitulierte, wurde James nach London zurückgebracht und im St. James’s Palace unter Hausarrest gestellt. 1648 floh er nach Den Haag.  
Als [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Vater (Karl I.) 1649 von Oliver Cromwell hingerichtet wurde, wurde [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) älterer [Bruder](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bruder/) Karl II. Zum neuen [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) ausgerufen. Charles wurde sowohl von Schottland als [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) von [Irland](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/irland/) anerkannt und 1651 in Scone zum [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) der Schotten gekrönt, musste aber nach [Frankreich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frankreich/) fliehen.  
James blieb [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) in [Frankreich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frankreich/) in Sicherheit und diente unter dem französischen Militärführer Turenne. Als [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) [Bruder](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bruder/) Charles jedoch 1656 ein Abkommen mit Spanien abschloss, wurde James aus [Frankreich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frankreich/) ausgewiesen. Er schloss sich dann der spanischen [Armee](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/armee/) an – gegen seine ehemaligen französischen Kameraden in der Schlacht bei den Dünen.  
Nach dem [Tod](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/tod/) von Oliver Cromwell im Jahr 1658 und dem anschließenden Zusammenbruch des Commonwealth im Jahr 1660 wurde Karl II. Auf den englischen Thron zurückversetzt. Nach der Restaurierung seines Bruders wurde James in Schottland zum Duke of [Albany](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/albany/) ernannt, um seinem englischen Titel, Duke of York, zu entsprechen.  
Nach seiner Rückkehr nach England löste James sofort eine Kontroverse aus, indem er seine Verlobung mit [Anne](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/anne/) Hyde, der Tochter von Charles ‚Ministerpräsident Edward Hyde, ankündigte. Nur zwei Töchter überlebten: Mary (geboren am 30. April 1662) und [Anne](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/anne/) (geboren am 6. Februar 1665). [Anne](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/anne/) [selbst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/selbst/) starb 1671.  
Nach der Restaurierung wurde James als Lord High Admiral bestätigt, ein [Amt](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/amt/), das die subsidiären Ernennungen des Gouverneurs von Portsmouth und des Lord Warden der Cinque Ports mit sich brachte. James befehligte die Royal Navy während des zweiten (1665–67) und dritten anglo-holländischen Krieges (1672–74). Nach dem Überfall auf den Medway im Jahr 1667 überwachte James die Überwachung und die Wiederbefestigung der Südküste.  
Nach seiner Eroberung durch die [Engländer](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/englaender/) im Jahr 1664 wurde das niederländische Gebiet von New Netherland zu James ‚Ehren zur Provinz New York ernannt. Nach der Gründung übergab der Herzog die Kolonie an die Eigentümer George Carteret und John Lord [Berkeley](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/berkeley/). Fort Orange, 240 Kilometer nördlich am Hudson River, wurde nach James ’schottischem Titel in [Albany](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/albany/) umbenannt.  
1683 wurde er [Gouverneur](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gouverneur/) der Hudson’s Bay Company. James gründete [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) die Royal African Company, eine der größten und profitabelsten Sklavenhandelsfirmen in der [Geschichte](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/geschichte/).

Die religiösen Spannungen nahmen [ab](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ab/) 1686 zu. [Ab](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ab/) 1686 erlaubte Jakobus den Katholiken, die höchsten Ämter der Königreiche zu besetzen, und erhielt an seinem Hof den päpstlichen [Nuntius](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/nuntius/) Ferdinando d’Adda, den ersten offiziellen Vertreter von [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) nach London seit der Regierungszeit von [Maria](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/maria/) I. 1687 gab Jakobus die Ablasserklärung heraus, die [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) als „Deklaration der Gewissensfreiheit“ bekannt ist und in der er seine aufschiebende [Kraft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kraft/) einsetzte, um die Wirkung von Gesetzen zur [Bestrafung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bestrafung/) von Katholiken und protestantischen Dissidenten zu negieren.  
Am 30. Juni 1688 lud eine [Gruppe](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gruppe/) protestantischer Adliger, später als die Unsterblichen Sieben bekannt, den Prinzen von Oranien ein, mit einer [Armee](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/armee/) nach England zu kommen. Als William am 5. November 1688 eintraf, schlossen sich viele protestantische Offiziere, darunter Churchill, William an, ebenso wie James ‚eigene Tochter Prinzessin [Anne](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/anne/). Am 11. Dezember floh Jakob nach [Frankreich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frankreich/) in den Hof von [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) Ludwig XIV., Der ihm einen Palast und eine Pension zur Verfügung stellte.  
Das wieder einberufene englische Parlament krönte daraufhin Wilhelm von Oranien zum neuen [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/), obwohl James nicht abdankte – es entstand eine verworrene [Geschichte](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/geschichte/), in der behauptet wurde, James habe das Große Siegel des Reiches „versehentlich“ in die Themse geworfen und damit [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) [Recht](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/recht/) verloren [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) – eine lächerliche Fantasie.  
Mit Unterstützung der französischen Truppen landete James im März 1689 in [Irland](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/irland/). Auf Drängen von James verabschiedete das irische Parlament ein [Gesetz](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gesetz/) zur Gewissensfreiheit, das [allen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/allen/) Katholiken und [Protestanten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/protestanten/) in [Irland](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/irland/) [Religionsfreiheit](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/religionsfreiheit/) gewährte. James Charles Stuart war der katholische Sohn der frommen katholischen Monarchin Mary, Königin der Schotten, und ihr zweiter Ehemann ([auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) ihr erster Cousin) Henry Stuart, Herzog von [Albany](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/albany/), [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) bekannt unter seinem schottischen Parlamentsnamen „Lord Darnley“. James wurde daher als Nachkomme Heinrichs VII. Von seiner Urgroßmutter Margaret Tudor, der älteren Schwester Heinrichs VIII., Geboren.  
Im Gegensatz zu absichtlich falschen historischen Berichten kehrte [Maria](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/maria/) 1561 aus [Frankreich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frankreich/) als populäre Monarchin in das ultra-katholische Schottland zurück, als Elisabeth I. – nach nur drei Jahren als Königin von England – versuchte, die protestantische [Bewegung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bewegung/) ihres Vaters wieder zu stärken und mächtige katholische Adlige zu berauben von ihrem Land zu Gunsten loyaler protestantischer Familien von geringerem Rang.  
Die Ankunft von Mary im Jahr 1561 – der ehemaligen Königin von [Frankreich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frankreich/) – hätte Elizabeth und ihre protestantischen Berater wie Sir Francis Walsingham schwer erschüttert. Als gläubige katholische und legitime Thronfolgerin wäre Elizabeth die [Macht](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/macht/) Mariens zu bewusst gewesen, um katholische Unterstützung in Schottland, England und [Irland](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/irland/) für ihre Sache zu sammeln. Um die Pläne von Mary zu umgehen, schlüpften Elizabeth und ihre Berater in einen Plan, und Lord Darnley wurde im Februar 1567 bei einer Explosion in Kirk o ‚Field, Edinburgh, ermordet. Anschließend heiratete Mary im Mai 1567 erneut James Hepburn, 4. Earl of Bothwell. Etwa zur gleichen [Zeit](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zeit/) kam der Franzose Esmé Stewart, Sieur d’Aubigny, der erste Cousin von James ‚Vater Lord Darnley (und später der Earl of Lennox). Er wurde schnell zum Liebling des Königs und es wird von den meisten angesehenen Historikern offen anerkannt, dass der Earl und der [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) am Hofe offen verliebt waren.  
Als Reaktion darauf ließen die protestantischen Grafen von Gowrie und Angus den [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) 1583 entführen und in Ruthven Castle einsperren, wodurch der junge französische Graf gezwungen wurde, nach [Frankreich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frankreich/) zurückzukehren. Nach seiner Freilassung im Jahr 1584 verkündete James mehrere Gesetze, um seine Kontrolle zu bekräftigen, und entfernte jeglichen letzten Einfluss protestantischer Berater innerhalb seines inneren Kreises – indem er den frommen Katholiken John Maitland zum Lord Chancellor of Scotland (1584-1592) ernannte und den [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) William Weston S.J. als [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) königlicher Beichtvater.  
Während dieser ganzen [Zeit](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zeit/) bat James weiterhin seine „Patin“ Elizabeth I. um die sichere Freilassung seiner [Mutter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mutter/) Mary. [Ende](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ende/) 1586 überredete Elizabeth James, den Vertrag von Berwick zu unterzeichnen, in dem er versprach, Elizabeth zu schützen und im Falle eines Angriffs einander zu helfen .  
Kaum war die Tinte auf dem Vertrag getrocknet, hatte Elizabeth Mary wegen Hochverrats versucht und im Februar 1587 hingerichtet. James vergab nie den Verrat von Elizabeth und den protestantischen Adligen für das, was sie seiner [Mutter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mutter/) angetan hatten – unterstützt durch die wenigen Worte zu diesem Thema [Geschichte](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/geschichte/) überlebt haben. Der junge schottische [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) war jedoch gezwungen, Elizabeth zu unterstützen oder alles zu verlieren. Dass Jakobus Elizabeth nicht den [Krieg](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/krieg/) erklärte, weil seine [Mutter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mutter/) ermordet wurde, ist ein [Beweis](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/beweis/) für die [Stärke](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/staerke/) von P. Der Vertrag sollte bald mit der Ankunft der spanischen Armada im Juli 1588 auf die Probe gestellt werden, gegen die James gezwungen war, Charles Howard und Francis Drake sowie Truppen gegen die erwartete Invasion mit Schiffen zu versorgen. Nach dem Sieg der [Engländer](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/englaender/) verließ James Schottland im September 1589, um offiziell mit [Anne](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/anne/) von Dänemark, der Tochter des protestantischen Königs Friedrich II. Von Dänemark, verheiratet zu werden. Er kehrte im folgenden Jahr um den Mai 1590 nach Schottland zurück.  
Trotz seiner [Ehe](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ehe/) und der [Geburt](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/geburt/) von Kindern blieben Elizabeth und ihre engsten Berater James gegenüber misstrauisch – wegen seiner bekannten homosexuellen Tendenzen und katholischen Ansichten. Bis 1597 bestand die reale Möglichkeit, dass James als der Erbe von der zunehmend kranken und alten Elizabeth entfernt werden würde.  
Dank seines Jesuitenrates veröffentlichte James „auf magische Weise“ in kurzer Folge zwei Broschüren – die erste im Jahr 1598 war The Trew Law of Free Monarchies -, die pro-protestantisch und anti-jesuitisch waren und ein philosophisches [Argument](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/argument/) für das [Recht](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/recht/) der Könige lieferten und Queens in England war göttlich und entsprach dem katholischen Konzept der Apostolischen Erbfolge. 1599 folgte rasch die Abhandlung Basilikon Doron (königliches Geschenk), in der die protestantischen Pflichten eines Königs oder einer Königin ihren Untertanen übertragen wurden.  
Die Schriften arbeiteten und im März 1603 arrangierte Sir Robert Cecil – der vertrauenswürdigste Berater von Elizabeth – die ordnungsgemäße Machtübertragung von Elizabeth nach ihrem [Tod](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/tod/) an James, den heutigen [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) von England (als James I) und Schottland (als James VI). James verabschiedete sich dann von seinem vertrauten Jesuiten-Beichtvater und Provinzial William Weston, der sich nach Spanien zurückzog und 1615 starb. Henry Garnet S.J. wurde zum neuen Jesuitenprovinzial ernannt, aber nicht länger mit dem Privileg, dem [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) Beichtvater zu [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/).  
Was [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) immer die Katholiken hofften, dass James die Unterdrückungsgesetze von Elizabeth aufheben würde, wurde bald zunichte gemacht, als [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) James Sir Robert Cecil als seinen engsten Gerichtsberater, [Thomas](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/thomas/) Egerton als Lord Chancellor und [Thomas](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/thomas/) Sackville als Lord Treasurer, zu behalten. Infolge dieser Pläne – und um zukünftige protestantische Unruhen zu beseitigen – befahl [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) James [Anfang](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/anfang/) 1604 den katholischen Geistlichen der Franziskaner, England mit [Ausnahme](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ausnahme/) der [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) zu verlassen. Inzwischen sind die [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) durch P. Henry Garnet S.J. waren maßgeblich an der Ausarbeitung eines Vertrags zwischen Spanien und England im selben Jahr (1604) beteiligt – die Behauptung, die protestantischen Adligen Sir Robert Cecil und Henry Howard hätten [dies](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/dies/) zu einer unmöglichen Fälschung gemacht.  
Ebenfalls 1604 berief [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) James auf Drängen der [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) die Hampton Court-Konferenz ein, auf der der [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) die [Zustimmung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zustimmung/) des englischen [Klerus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/klerus/) einholte, mit der [Arbeit](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/arbeit/) an einer „englischen“ [Bibel](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bibel/) zu beginnen, um die auf dem englischen [Protestanten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/protestanten/) basierende [Bibel](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bibel/) der Bischöfe zu ersetzen Genfer [Bibel](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bibel/) – als offizielle Version für Lesungen der Church of England. Für diese [Aufgabe](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/aufgabe/) wurden sechs (6) Komitees mit dem [Namen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/namen/) „Unternehmen“ eingerichtet, das 1. Westminister-Unternehmen, das 1. Cambridge-Unternehmen, das 1. Oxford-Unternehmen, das 2. Oxford-Unternehmen, das 2. Westminister-Unternehmen und das 2. Cambridge-Unternehmen – wobei Oxford als traditionelle katholische Hochburg die wichtigsten [Elemente](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/elemente/) erhielt einschließlich [Evangelien](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/evangelien/), [Apostelgeschichte](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/apostelgeschichte/) und Offenbarung.  
Allerdings waren nicht alle protestantischen Adligen von der echten „protestantischen“ [Natur](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/natur/) des Königs überzeugt, insbesondere das Parlament. Ein frühes Ziel von James war es, einen Rivalen „[Union](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/union/) of Crowns [Corporation](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/corporation/)“ (oder einfach „die [Union](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/union/)“) mit der „Crown of [Aragon](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/aragon/) [Corporation](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/corporation/)“ zu gründen, indem die Kronen von England, [Irland](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/irland/) und Schottland unter einer [Union](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/union/), einem Satz von Gesetzen vereint wurden und ein Monarch unter der gesetzlichen Kontrolle des „Meeres“ (siehe oder [Heiliger Stuhl](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/heiliger-stuhl/)).  
Ursprünglich sollte das Parlament 1604 eröffnet werden, es wurde jedoch bis 1605 aufgeschoben, als die [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) einen falschen Plan in die Tat umsetzten, um alle wichtigen protestantischen Adligen durch die Zerstörung des Parlaments auf einmal zu töten. Es war geplant, mehrere katholische Adlige als Handlanger der Verschwörung zu opfern und sie kurz vor ihrer Hinrichtung freizulegen – um die Adligen hinter James und [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Ziel der „[Union](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/union/) of Crowns“ zu vereinen.  
Der Plan funktionierte mit einer [Ausnahme](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ausnahme/). Sir Robert Cecil „vereitelte“ vorhersehbar die Schießpulver-Verschwörung, und mehrere katholische Adlige wurden gefunden und brutal hingerichtet. Aber der General der [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) Henry Garnet S.J. wurde [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) beteiligt und durchgeführt.  
Nach der Hinrichtung des Jesuitenprovinzials durch [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) James hatten genügend protestantische Adlige den „[Beweis](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/beweis/)“, den sie wollten, und lehnten ihren Einwand gegen die „[Union](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/union/) of Crowns“ [ab](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ab/). So erklärte sich [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) James 1605 zum „King of Great Britain“.  
Am wichtigsten ist jedoch, dass der vom Generaloberen der [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/), Claudio Acquaviva SJ, geleitete [Anwalt](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/anwalt/) Camillo Borghese Paul V. (1605-1621) eine offizielle Entschuldigung als [Brief](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/brief/) an einen so hochrangigen [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) richtete Patent für den [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) – [Anerkennung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/anerkennung/) als [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) von [Großbritannien](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/grossbritannien/) (daher die [Union](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/union/) of Crowns [Corporation](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/corporation/)) und Zusicherung, dass weder das [Papsttum](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papsttum/) noch die [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) die [Aktion](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/aktion/) von Pater Dr. Henry Garnet S.J. und seine katholischen Mitverschwörer. Leider soll das Patent für Briefe verloren gegangen [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) – der erste historische offizielle [Brief](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/brief/), in dem die [Union](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/union/) der Kronen als legitime Unternehmenseinheit anerkannt wird.  
Mit dem [Besitz](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/besitz/) der vom Heiligen Stuhl anerkannten Rechtsposition der [Union](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/union/) of Crowns [Corporation](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/corporation/) („die [Krone](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/krone/)“ und [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) die „[Union](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/union/)“) setzte King James mehrere königliche Urkunden durch die [Corporation](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/corporation/) frei, darunter die King’s Men – eine Spielgruppe von Schauspielern, die Theaterstücke vorstellten angeblich von William [Shakespeare](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/shakespeare/) geschrieben – aber eigentlich vom Jesuitenkolleg für [Englisch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/englisch/) in [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/).  
Im April 1606 erteilte James die Royal Charter der Virginia Company of London ([auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) bekannt als „London Company“ und einfach „the Company“), um Kolonialsiedlungen in Nordamerika [ab](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ab/) dem 34. Breitengrad (Cape Fear) zu errichten. nördlich bis zum 41. Breitengrad (in Long Island Sound).  
Im selben Jahr (1606) erteilte King James [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) die Royal Charter der Virginia Company of Plymouth ([auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) bekannt als die „Plymouth Company“ und die „Virginia Bay Company“) mit dem Ziel, Kolonialsiedlungen in Nordamerika zu errichten vom 38. Breitengrad (Chesapeake Bay) nach Norden bis zum 45. Breitengrad (Maine). Da beide Unternehmen Gebiete hatten, die sich absichtlich überschnitten, war in ihren Chartas festgelegt, dass keines der beiden Unternehmen eine Siedlung innerhalb von 160 km (100 Meilen) von einer bestehenden Siedlung des anderen Unternehmens aus gründen konnte.  
Die Behauptung, dass die Virginia-Unternehmen nach Elizabeth benannt wurden, ist eine absurde und unerträgliche [Lüge](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/luege/), da es überwältigende [Beweise](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/beweise/) dafür gibt, dass James Elizabeth dafür hasste, dass er seine [Mutter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mutter/) getötet hatte. Stattdessen wählte King James den [Namen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/namen/) Virginia zu Ehren seiner [Mutter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mutter/) Mary, benannt nach der „Virgin“ Mary und zu Ehren der [Anerkennung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/anerkennung/) der English Crown [Corporation](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/corporation/) durch den Heiligen Stuhl. In der Tat ist die Behauptung, dass Elizbeth als „die jungfräuliche Königin“ bekannt war, eine Erfindung des 19. Jahrhunderts, um die offensichtliche Etymologie des Staates Virginia zu verbergen.

Wie frühere Abschriften griechischer Schriften aus der [Zeit](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zeit/) der ersten christlichen [Ausbildung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ausbildung/) unter [Konstantin](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/konstantin/) historisch belegen, gab es keinerlei Hinweise auf die komplexe [Theologie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/theologie/) des römischen Kultes wie die [Geburt](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/geburt/) der „Jungfrau“. Daher ist es nicht möglich, dass die wissenschaftlichen Teams, die die King-James-Bibel zusammenstellten, frühe griechische Texte verwendeten, es sei denn, sie erhielten [Fälschungen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/faelschungen/) oder implantierten die vatikanische Doktrin absichtlich in ihren Text.  
Trotz aller Geschicklichkeit und brillanten Manöver des Königs in seiner frühen Regierungszeit, nahm James es 1612 auf sich, persönlicher in die Regierungsführung einbezogen zu werden, einschließlich einer allgemeinen Missachtung, weil er seine offen homosexuellen Neigungen gegenüber jungen Männern versteckte.  
Bis 1620 freute sich James, dass [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Sohn und Erbe Charles I. eine aktivere Rolle in der [Regierung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/regierung/) übernahmen. Von der Veröffentlichung falscher Aussagen zum Zwecke von Mord und Profit: (1597) Der englische [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) James I. veröffentlicht Daemonologie, das offizielle Handbuch der schottischen Hexenfinder; es unterstützt das Schwimmen und Stechen, um das Mal des Teufels zu [finden](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/finden/).  
Wegen Mordes: (1597) 23 Frauen und ein [Mann](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mann/) werden in [Aberdeen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/aberdeen/) in einem der berüchtigtsten Hexenprozesse in Schottland verbrannt. Beschuldigt werden vor allem ältere Frauen.

Oliver Cromwell wurde am 25. April 1599 als Sohn von Elizabeth und Robert Cromwell (ca. 1560-1617) in Huntingdon geboren, um den [Adel](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/adel/) zu senken. Er stammte von Catherine Cromwell ([geb](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/geb/). um 1482) [ab](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ab/), einer älteren Schwester des Tudor-Staatsmannes [Thomas](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/thomas/) Cromwell. [Sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Vater war das jüngste von zehn Geschwistern und erbte nur einen kleinen Haus- und Landtitel.  
Am 22. August 1620 heiratete Cromwell Elizabeth Bourchier (1598–1665). Sie hatten neun Kinder: Richard (1626-1712), Cromwells Nachfolger als Lord Protector, und Henry (1628-1674), später Lord Deputy of Ireland.  
Aus finanziellen Gründen verkaufte Cromwell 1631 die meisten seiner Grundstücke in Huntingdon und zog auf einen kleineren Bauernhof in St. Ives. Im Jahr 1636 erbte Cromwell die Kontrolle über verschiedene Grundstücke in Ely von seinem Onkel auf der Seite seiner [Mutter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mutter/) sowie die [Aufgabe](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/aufgabe/) seines Onkels als Zehnten-Sammler für die Kathedrale von Ely, wodurch sich seine finanzielle Situation und [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Status dramatisch verbesserten.  
Cromwell wurde das Mitglied des Parlaments für Huntingdon im Parlament von 1628 bis 1629, als Kunde des Montagus.  
Nachdem dieses Parlament aufgelöst worden war, regierte Charles I. die nächsten elf Jahre ohne Parlament. Als Charles sich dem schottischen Aufstand gegenübersah, der als Bischofskriege bekannt war, zwang ihn der Geldmangel, 1640 erneut ein Parlament einzuberufen. Cromwell wurde als Mitglied für Cambridge in dieses Parlament zurückgebracht, hielt aber nur drei Wochen an und wurde als Short bekannt Parlament. Ein zweites Parlament wurde später im selben Jahr einberufen. [Dies](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/dies/) sollte als Langes Parlament bekannt werden. Cromwell wurde erneut als Mitglied für Cambridge in dieses Parlament zurückgebracht.  
Das Versäumnis, die Probleme vor dem Langen Parlament zu lösen, führte im [Herbst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/herbst/) 1642 zu einem bewaffneten Konflikt zwischen Parlament und Karl I. Cromwell wurde ein Kavallerietruppenführer ohne nennenswerte militärische Erfahrung und erlebte im Oktober 1642 eine unentschlossene Schlacht bei Edgehill.  
Zur [Zeit](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zeit/) der Schlacht von Marston Moor im Juli 1644 war Cromwell zum Generalleutnant der Manchester-Armee aufgestiegen. Der Erfolg seiner Kavallerie, die Reihen der Royalisten zu durchbrechen und dann ihre Infanterie von hinten in Marston Moor anzugreifen, war ein wesentlicher Faktor für den Sieg der Parlamentarier in der Schlacht.  
Im April 1645 ging die New Model Army mit Sir [Thomas](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/thomas/) Fairfax als Kommandeur und Cromwell als Generalleutnant der Kavallerie und stellvertretendem Kommandeur auf das Feld. Am 5. Mai 1646 ergab sich Karl I. den Schotten und beendete den Ersten Englischen Bürgerkrieg. Cromwell und Fairfax ergaben sich im Juni in Oxford offiziell den Royalisten.  
Im Jahr 1648 arrangierte Cromwell mit Oberst [Thomas](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/thomas/) Pride den [Ausschluss](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ausschluss/) von Mitgliedern aus dem Parlament, die nicht wollten, dass der [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) wegen Hochverrats vor [Gericht](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gericht/) gestellt wurde. Der daraus resultierende „Rumpf“, von dem Cromwell ein hochrangiges Mitglied war, wählte dann ihren eigenen Staatsrat, in dem Cromwell eine wichtige Persönlichkeit war.  
1649, nachdem die verbleibenden royalistischen Kräfte nach [Irland](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/irland/) geflohen waren und einen Vertrag mit den irischen Konföderierten Katholiken unterzeichnet hatten, führte Cromwell eine parlamentarische Invasion in [Irland](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/irland/) durch und startete einen der brutalsten Völkermorde der Menschheitsgeschichte.  
In einer von vielen Folgen in Drogheda befahl Cromwell das Massaker an der gesamten [Stadt](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/stadt/) und den Truppen – insgesamt 3.500 [Seelen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/seelen/) – einschließlich Männern, Frauen und Kindern.  
Am [Ende](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ende/) seines Feldzugs war ein Drittel der irischen [Bevölkerung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bevoelkerung/) auf Befehl von Cromwell (über 500.000 Menschen) brutal ermordet worden, und die verbleibende Million war in die Steinzeit zurückgedrängt worden.

Wieder war seine [böse](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/boese/) [Absicht](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/absicht/) nur an einem [Beispiel](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/beispiel/) für die Zerstörung von Dundee zu [sehen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sehen/), bei der mindestens die Hälfte der [Bevölkerung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bevoelkerung/) (etwa 6.000) getötet wurde – die wenigen, die noch übrig waren, wurden Sexsklaven und Sklaven als [Arbeiter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/arbeiter/).  
1653 wurde Cromwell als Lord Protector vereidigt – eine Rolle des virtuellen Richters, der Jury und des Henkers in England, [Irland](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/irland/) und Schottland.

Karl II. Wurde [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/), als [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Vater Karl I. am 30. Januar 1649, dem Höhepunkt des englischen Bürgerkriegs, in Whitehall hingerichtet wurde. Das englische Parlament proklamierte zu diesem Zeitpunkt Karl II. Nicht zum [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/), und England trat in die der [Geschichte](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/geschichte/) als englisches Interregnum bekannte [Zeit](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zeit/) ein. Das schottische Parlament hingegen proklamierte am 5. Februar 1649 in Edinburgh den schottischen [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) Karl II. Er wurde am 1. Januar 1651 in Scone zum [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) der Schotten gekrönt. Nach seiner Niederlage in der Schlacht von Worcester am 3. September 1651 floh Charles auf den Kontinent und verbrachte die nächsten neun Jahre im Exil in [Frankreich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frankreich/), den Vereinigten Provinzen und den spanischen Niederlanden.  
Nachdem das Protektorat 1659 unter Richard Cromwell zusammengebrochen war, lud General George Monck Charles ein, zurückzukehren und die Throne in der sogenannten Restauration zu übernehmen. Karl II. Kam am 25. Mai 1660 auf englischem Boden an und zog an seinem dreißigsten Geburtstag, dem 29. Mai 1660, nach London ein. Karl wurde am 23. Das englische Parlament von Charles erließ strenge antipuritanische Gesetze, die als Clarendon Code bekannt sind und die Position der wiedererrichteten Church of England stärken sollen.  
Das wichtigste außenpolitische Thema in Karls früher Regierungszeit war der Zweite englisch-niederländische [Krieg](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/krieg/). 1670 trat Charles in den Geheimvertrag von Dover ein, einem Bündnis mit Louis XIV., Unter dessen Bedingungen Louis sich bereit erklärte, Charles im dritten englisch-niederländischen [Krieg](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/krieg/) zu helfen und Charles eine Rente zu zahlen, und Charles trat heimlich zum römischen [Katholizismus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/katholizismus/) über, einschließlich der Königliche [Familie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/familie/).  
Karl versuchte mit seiner königlichen Ablaßerklärung von 1672, die [Religionsfreiheit](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/religionsfreiheit/) für Katholiken und protestantische Andersdenkende einzuführen, aber das englische Parlament zwang ihn, sie zurückzuziehen.

Claudio Acquaviva wurde in [Atri](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/atri/) (Teramo) [Italien](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/italien/) als jüngster Sohn des Adligen Giovanni Antonio Donato von [Aragon](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/aragon/), des Herzogs von [Atri](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/atri/), geboren.  
Nach anfänglichen Studien der Geisteswissenschaften (Latein, [Griechisch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/griechisch/) und [Hebräisch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/hebraeisch/)) und der [Mathematik](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mathematik/) studierte er Rechtswissenschaften in Perugia und wurde dann vom [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Pius IV. (1559-1565) zum Päpstlichen Kammerherrn ernannt.  
Nach dem [Tod](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/tod/) von [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Pius IV. Am 9. Dezember 1565 stellten sich die päpstlichen Familien de Medici, Farnese und Borja erneut gegen die Interessen Neapels und der anderen päpstlichen Familien.  
[Kardinal](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kardinal/) Francisco Borja strebte die Position des Papstes gegen [Kardinal](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kardinal/) Antonio Ghislieri an, den berüchtigten Obersten Inquisitor unter [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Paul IV. (1555-1559), dem [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Rang entzogen worden war und der unter [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Pius IV. Verbannt worden war.  
[Kardinal](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kardinal/) Antonio Ghislieri gewann die [Wahl](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/wahl/) und wurde am 7. Januar 1566 zum [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Pius V gewählt. Innerhalb weniger Tage wurde Diego Laynez SJ, 2. Generaloberer der [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/), im [Alter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/alter/) von 53 Jahren von [Kardinal](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kardinal/) Francisco Borja ermordet.  
Claudio Acquaviva schloss sich dann den Anhängern von [Kardinal](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kardinal/) Francisco Borja an, um sicherzustellen, dass er zum neuen und 3. Generaloberen der [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) gewählt wurde. Claudio Acquaviva spielte unter [Kardinal](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kardinal/) Borja eine einflussreiche Rolle und die [Macht](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/macht/) und der Einfluss der [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) nahmen beträchtlich zu.  
Als Generaloberer Francisco Borja am 30. September 1572 starb, galt Claudio Acquaviva als [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) gesalbter Nachfolger. Der italienische [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) [Gregor](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gregor/) XIII. (1572-1585) ernannte jedoch seinen eigenen Kandidaten Everard de Marcour zum neuen Generaloberen. Als Everard de Marcour 1580 starb, wurde Claudio Acquaviva der fünfte Generaloberer der [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/).

(1590-91), Innozenz IX. (1591), Clemens VIII. (1592-1605) und Leo XI. (1605) ). [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Paul V. (1605-21) überlebte ihn kaum und das lag am [Tod](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/tod/) Philipps II.  
Während seiner 33 Jahre und 11 Monate als General gibt es verständlicherweise eine lange Liste seiner Leistungen und Interessen. Die Größe der [Gesellschaft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gesellschaft/) hatte sich von 5.000 auf 13.000 verdreifacht, [Schulen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/schulen/) von 124 auf 372 und Provinzen von 21 auf 32. Während seines Generalats wurden die berühmten Jesuitenmissionen in Paraguay gegründet. Er förderte aktiv die Missionen in Japan, England, Deutschland, [Frankreich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frankreich/), Flandern und Spanien. Er war sich der kulturellen Probleme der Jesuitenmissionare in fernen Missionsländern sehr bewusst.  
1579 sandte General Acquaviva den berüchtigten [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) Alessandro Valignano S.J. nach Japan, um eine stärkere Handelspräsenz zu sichern und den [Orden](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/orden/) auszubauen. Er ersetzte [Francisco Cabral](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/francisco-cabral/) als Vorgesetzter der Jesuitenmission. Valignano änderte sofort die Struktur der [Erziehung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/erziehung/) von der [Entwicklung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/entwicklung/) der [Priester](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/priester/) zur Förderung der Kriegerpriester und zur [Erziehung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/erziehung/) der japanischen Adligen.  
Im Jahr 1580 wurde P. Vilela S.J. Es gelang, den Hafen von Nagasaki von einem örtlichen japanischen Kriegsherrn zu kaufen. General Acquaviva förderte das [Wachstum](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/wachstum/) von Nagasaki, das den [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) gehörte, zu einem der profitabelsten Handelshäfen der Welt. Das [Eigentum](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/eigentum/) der [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) am Hafen von Nagasaki gab der [Gesellschaft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gesellschaft/) ein konkretes Steuermonopol für alle nach Japan eingeführten Waren. Am aktivsten war die [Gesellschaft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gesellschaft/) im japanischen Silberhandel, bei dem große Mengen japanischen Silbers gegen chinesische Seide nach Canton verschifft wurden.  
Er förderte die Einrichtung von Sodalitäten für Studenten und Absolventen der Jesuitenkollegs und versuchte, die durch die Theorien von Galileo hervorgerufenen Umwälzungen zu mildern. Er war es, der den Eintritt von Aloysius Gonzaga in die [Gesellschaft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gesellschaft/) am 25. November 1585 genehmigte .  
1590 beschloss [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Sixtus V., den [Namen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/namen/) „[Gesellschaft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gesellschaft/) Jesu“ in „Ignatiner [Orden](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/orden/)“ zu ändern. Den [Namen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/namen/) [Jesus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesus/) im Titel eines bloßen Ordens zu verwenden, sagte Sixtus und viele andere, sei für fromme [Ohren](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ohren/) „beleidigend“ . „Jedes Mal, wenn du diese [Gesellschaft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gesellschaft/) nennst“, murrte ein [Kardinal](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kardinal/), „musst du deinen Hut abnehmen oder deinen [Kopf](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kopf/) neigen.“  
Claudio Acquaviva protestierte gegen Sixtus und wies darauf hin, dass in den [Augen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/augen/) der [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) der Name der [Gesellschaft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gesellschaft/) zu den „Begründungen“ der [Gesellschaft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gesellschaft/) gehörte. Weder er noch eine Generalkongregation von [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) konnten den [Namen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/namen/) ändern. Sixtus behielt seine [Entscheidung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/entscheidung/) bei und befahl seinen eigenen päpstlichen Beamten, ein Dekret auszuarbeiten, das den [Namen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/namen/) entsprechend änderte.  
General Claudio Acquaviva ließ dann [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Sixtus am 27. August 1590 durch Gift töten. Der folgende [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) (Urban) ließ die [Idee](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/idee/) sofort fallen.  
Als Reaktion auf den Versuch der Portugiesen, die [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) in Japan durch die Bewaffnung ihrer Feinde einzuschränken, schloss sich General Claudio Acquaviva 1595 mit den Holländern zusammen, um deren Handelsschiffe und Handel zu unterstützen. Als Reaktion auf die neue [Allianz](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/allianz/) gab das englische Parlament eine Charta heraus, die 1600 ein [Monopol](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/monopol/) auf die Piratenhandelsallianz der East India Company gewährte.

Zur Gründung eines rechtswidrigen Unternehmens zum Zwecke der Kriminalität: (1602) Der Jesuitenorden unter Generaloberst Claudio Acquaviva (1581 – 1615) und seine Wirtschaftsförderer bildeten die Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC) in niederländischer [Sprache](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sprache/), wörtlich „United East Indies Company (Vereinigte Ostindien-Kompanie). Niederländische Ostindien-Kompanie). Der gebürtige Sienaer, ein Mitglied der berühmten Bankenfamilie von Chigi und ein Großneffe von [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Paul V. (1605–1621), wurde privat unterrichtet und promovierte schließlich in [Philosophie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/philosophie/), [Recht](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/recht/) und [Theologie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/theologie/) an der [Universität](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/universitaet/) von Siena.  
1627 begann er seine Lehre als vizepäpstlicher Legat bei Ferrara und wurde auf Empfehlung zweier Kardinäle nacheinander zum Inquisitor von Malta und [Nuntius](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/nuntius/) in Köln ernannt (1639–1651). Dort unterstützte er Urban VIII. Bei der Verurteilung von Jansenius ‚Augustinus durch den In eminenti-Papst von 1642.  
1648 war [Kardinal](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kardinal/) Fabio Chigi im [Namen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/namen/) von [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Innozenz X. (1644-1655) aktiv, um den fragilen Vertrag von Westfalen, der den Dreißigjährigen [Krieg](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/krieg/) (1618-1648) beendete, zu destabilisieren und zu stoppen. April 1655 unter dem [Namen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/namen/) [Alexander VII](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/alexander-vii/). Zum [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) gewählt.  
Im April 1656 kündigte er an, dass [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) [Bruder](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bruder/) und seine Neffen ihn in [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) unterstützen würden. Die [Verwaltung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/verwaltung/) wurde größtenteils in die [Hände](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/haende/) seiner Verwandten gegeben, und der Vetternwirtschaft wurde so luxuriös verankert wie im Barockpapsttum: Er gab ihnen die bestbezahlten bürgerlichen und kirchlichen Ämter sowie fürstliche Schlösser und Anwesen, die für die Chigi von geeignet waren Siena.

Als die Venezianer auf [Kreta](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kreta/) um Hilfe gegen die osmanischen Türken riefen, holte [der Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/der-papst/) im Gegenzug ein Versprechen ein, dass die [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) nach ihrer Vertreibung im Jahr 1606 wieder in venezianisches Gebiet zurückkehren sollten. Er beteiligte sich [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) weiterhin an ihrem Konflikt mit den Jansenisten, deren Verurteilung er als Berater von [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Innozenz X energisch unterstützt hatte.

Oliva stammte aus Genua und war 1616 in den Verein eingetreten. Er war Rektor des Deutschen Kollegs, Novizenmeister und ein hervorragender Prediger. Zu seinen Gunsten und zum Wohle der [Gesellschaft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gesellschaft/) [stand](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/stand/) er [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) mit vier Päpsten in einem guten Verhältnis.  
Neun Jahre waren seit der letzten Generalkongregation vergangen – der 10. – und so wurde die 11. [Kongregation](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kongregation/) vom 9. Mai 1661 bis zum 27. Juli einberufen. Die Delegierten hatten ein Problem. Nickel, der 80 Jahre [alt](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/alt/) war, war ernsthaft handlungsunfähig und hatte oft nach einem Vikar gefragt. [Der Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/der-papst/) wurde gebeten, die Delegierten zu ermächtigen, einen Vikar zu ernennen, der das [Recht](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/recht/) auf Nachfolge hat und der sofort mit den vollen Befugnissen eines Generals handeln kann. Am 7. Juni 1661 wurde Oliva zum Vikar gewählt. Die [Historiker](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/historiker/) [Astrain](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/astrain/) und Bangert [sagen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sagen/) beide, Nickel sei „nur im [Namen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/namen/) [allgemein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/allgemein/): Oliva im [Namen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/namen/)“. Nickel lebte in dieser Situation weitere drei Jahre und wurde schließlich älter, und ein sehr kranker [Mann](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/mann/) gab seine [Seele](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/seele/) seinem Schöpfer preis. Oliva, der in der letzten [Kongregation](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kongregation/) zum Vikar mit [Erbrecht](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/erbrecht/) gewählt worden war, übernahm nun seine komplette Funktion als General.  
Während der siebzehn Jahre und vier Monate seines Generalats war [Europa](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/europa/) kein friedlicher Ort und Olivas [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) und ihre Werke waren in ständiger Gefahr. Der Dreißigjährige [Krieg](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/krieg/) wurde immer noch geführt; Ludwig XIV. Befand sich in Versailles auf dem französischen Thron zum Ruhm Frankreichs und zum [Elend](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/elend/) der übrigen Welt. Katholiken wurden wegen eines angeblichen Versuchs, das Parlamentsgebäude in London in die [Luft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/luft/) zu sprengen, verfolgt und verurteilt.  
Aber er hatte [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) einige tröstende Momente. Das [Heilige](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/heilige/) [Herz](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/herz/) war einer Nonne in [Frankreich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frankreich/) erschienen, deren Beichtvater ein Jesuit war. Die [Kirche](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kirche/) des Hl. Ignatius wurde schließlich 1642 zur Bewunderung aller fertiggestellt. Die Dekoration der Gesí und der Noviziatskirche des Hl. Andrea al Quirinale erfolgte zur [Zufriedenheit](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/zufriedenheit/) ihres Architekten Bernini, der ein enger Freund von Oliva war.

Obwohl die [Synode](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/synode/) von Brest 1595 die [Führung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/fuehrung/) der [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) und der Dominikaner in Mitleidenschaft zog, weigerte sich [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Clemens VIII., Eine [Entscheidung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/entscheidung/) zu treffen.  
Er suchte rücksichtslos diejenigen heraus, die Zeichen kreativen Genies zeigten und den Wunsch hatten, sich vom Wahnsinn der papsttümlichen „flachen [Erde](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/erde/)“ -Ansicht zu lösen. Am 17. Februar 1600 wurde [Giordano Bruno](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/giordano-bruno/), ein überzeugter Anhänger des freien Willens, allein aufgrund des Befehls von [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Clemens VIII. Lebendig verbrannt.  
Unter den vielen bösen Taten von [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Clemens VIII. War einer der schlimmsten der Mord auf Befehl des Papstes von Francesco Cenci, einer wohlhabenden [Familie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/familie/), die verschiedene Güter und Grundstücke besaß, darunter den Palazzo Cenci. 1598 befahl [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Clemens VIII., Cenci zu töten. Dann ließ er seine Kinder wegen Mordes an ihrem Vater verhaften, wobei Giacomo mit einem Holzhammer geviertelt und seine Gliedmaßen zu vier Vierteln aufgehängt wurden. [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Clemens VIII. War [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) ein voll engagierter Antisemit mit tiefem Hass auf die Juden.  
In Cum saepe accidere (28. Februar 1592) verbot er der traditionsreichen jüdischen Gemeinde der päpstlichen Enklave [Avignon](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/avignon/), neue Waren zu verkaufen, sie zu benachteiligen und das Klischee des Juden als Händler von Gebrauchtwaren zu fördern.  
Mit Caeca et obdurata (25. Februar 1593) bestätigte er die [Bulle](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bulle/) von [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Paul III. (1534–49), die ein Ghetto für die antike Judengemeinschaft in [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) errichtete, und bekräftigte das Verbot von Juden, die ansonsten offiziell ausgewiesen worden waren die päpstlichen Staaten von [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Pius V (1566–72) (in Hebraeorum gens, 26. Februar 1569) wohnten außerhalb der Ghettos von [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/), [Ancona](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ancona/) und [Avignon](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/avignon/) und stellten so sicher, dass sie Stadtbewohner blieben.

Es wird behauptet, dass Clemens VIII. Verweis auf die „[blinde](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/blinde/) (lateinische: caeca) Hartnäckigkeit“ der Juden den religiösen [Bogen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bogen/) „kike“ ausgelöst hat.  
Er ist verstorben am 3. März 1605.

Über die Veröffentlichung falscher Aussagen zum Zweck des Mordes: (1595) Der französische Richter Nicholas Remy (1530-1612) veröffentlicht Demonolatreiae mit der Begründung, dass „alles, was nicht normal ist, dem [Teufel](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/teufel/) zu verdanken ist“.

Des Mordes: (1600) Der Wissenschaftler und Philosoph [Giordano Bruno](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/giordano-bruno/) steht in [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) auf dem Spiel, weil er sich für Copernicus ‚[Theorie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/theorie/) einsetzt, wonach [Planeten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/planeten/) die Sonne umkreisen.  
Über Verbrechen gegen die Menschlichkeit: (1602) 600 Menschen, darunter [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) kleine Kinder, werden vom berüchtigtsten Hexenrichter Burgunds, Henri Boguet (1550-1619), auf den Scheiterhaufen geschickt. Viele werden brutal gefoltert.  
Zur Gründung eines rechtswidrigen Unternehmens zum Zwecke der Kriminalität: (1602) Dass der Jesuitenorden und seine Wirtschaftsförderer die Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC) auf Niederländisch, wörtlich „United East Indies Company (Niederländische Ostindien-Kompanie)“, gegründet haben. Der Zweck dieses kriminellen Unternehmens bestand darin, Handelsmonopole für die Ausbeutung von Gütern und Materialien zu errichten, die von Jesuitenmissionaren in ganz [Asien](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/asien/) identifiziert wurden. Darüber hinaus könnten die durch diesen Handel gewonnenen Mittel dann dazu verwendet werden, die Ziele sowohl des Jesuitenordens als [auch](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/auch/) der römisch-katholischen [Kirche](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kirche/) zu fördern. Februar 1646 einen Bullenbescheid, wonach [allen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/allen/) Kardinälen, die den [Kirchenstaat](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kirchenstaat/) ohne ausdrückliche päpstliche Erlaubnis für ein halbes Jahr verlassen könnten, die Vorteile und schließlich das Kardinalat [selbst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/selbst/) entzogen werden sollten. Das französische Parlament erklärte die päpstliche Verordnung in [Frankreich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frankreich/) für nichtig, aber Innozenz X gab nicht nach, bis Mazarin bereit war, Truppen nach [Italien](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/italien/) zu schicken. Von nun an wurde die päpstliche [Politik](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/politik/) gegenüber [Frankreich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frankreich/) freundlicher, und etwas später wurden die [Barberini](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/barberini/) rehabilitiert.  
[Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Innozenz X. befahl die Wiederaufnahme der Feindseligkeiten gegen das Herzogtum Parma und befahl die Zerstörung der [Stadt](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/stadt/) Castro am 2. September 1649 auf Kosten vieler unschuldiger Menschen.  
[Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Innozenz X. lehnte nachdrücklich die Schaffung eines Friedens zwischen den europäischen Mächten und die Beendigung des Dreißigjährigen Krieges [ab](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ab/), der zig Millionen Menschen das [Leben](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/leben/) gekostet hatte. Der andauernde [Krieg](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/krieg/) hatte den Interessen des Vatikans gedient und im November 1648 den päpstlichen Bullen Zelo Domus Dei herausgegeben, der den Westfälischen Friedensvertrag kündigte, den die europäischen Mächte ignorierten.

[Der Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/der-papst/) sandte Giovanni Battista Rinuccini, den Erzbischof von Fermo, als [Nuntius](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/nuntius/) nach [Irland](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/irland/), der mit einer großen Menge Waffen und Militärbedarf, darunter 20.000 Pfund Schießpulver, mit einer sehr großen Geldsumme nach Kilkenny kam. Aber ohne päpstliche Truppen waren die Gesten eher symbolisch und höchstwahrscheinlich darauf ausgerichtet, das Konflikttheater zu erweitern.

Er wurde 1622 in Argante, einer kleinen [Stadt](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/stadt/) in Leon, Spanien, geboren. Er war 1642 im [Alter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/alter/) von 20 Jahren in die [Gesellschaft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gesellschaft/) eingetreten und wurde ein bekannter Prediger der Pfarrgemeinde in einem Team mit einem [gewissen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gewissen/) [Gabriel](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gabriel/) Guillén. Die beiden waren in ganz Spanien für ihre Pfarrmissionen bekannt und arbeiteten von 1665 bis 1672 erfolgreich zusammen.  
Dann wurde Gonzalez zum Theologie-Lehrer in Salamanca ernannt, und dort wurde er von den theologischen Ansichten besessen, die unter Theologen als Probabilismus versus Probabiliorismus bekannt waren, einer strenger in moralischen [Fragen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/fragen/) als der andere, wonach die Freundschaft mit Guillén abbrach.  
Nach dem [Tod](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/tod/) von de Noyelle wurde die 13. Generalkongregation vom 22. Juni bis zum 7. September 1667 einberufen.  
[Der Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/der-papst/) hatte klargestellt, dass die [Kongregation](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kongregation/) Gonzalez General wählen und ein Dekret verabschieden soll, in dem ausdrücklich festgelegt wird, dass es den [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) freigestellt ist, den Probabiliorismus mit gutem [Gewissen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gewissen/) zu verteidigen. Der 65-jährige Gonzalez wurde auf Antrag von Innocent am 6. Juli 1687 zum General gewählt.  
Als das Vorhaben von [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) Jakob II. Von England, es zur katholischen [Herrschaft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/herrschaft/) zurückzuführen, scheiterte, entkam er im Dezember 1688 den Streitkräften Wilhelms von Oranien von Paris. Aus [Angst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/angst/) vor den Gefahren seines eigenen Hofes bat [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) Ludwig XIV. Die [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/), ihm Sicherheit zu gewähren und ihn auf dem Gelände des Collège de Clermont in Paris zu verstecken.  
General Gonzalez sandte Michelangelo Tamburini S.J. sich mit dem [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) am Collège de Clermont zu treffen und ihm einen Plan vorzuschlagen, um den protestantischen [Adel](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/adel/) und seine Freimaurerclubs zu untergraben, indem die Mythologie der [Templer](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/templer/) „wiederbelebt“ und eine Freimaurerloge mit höherer [Autorität](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/autoritaet/) errichtet wird. [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) James II stimmte zu und führte die ersten 25 Riten des schottischen Ritus durch, wie sie von den [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) verfasst wurden.  
1696, am 14., wurde die Generalkongregation auf Wunsch des Papstes von Gonzalez einberufen. [Dies](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/dies/) geschah in Übereinstimmung mit dem Dekret von Innozenz X., wonach die [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) alle neun Jahre eine Generalkongregation abhalten mussten.  
Gonzalez war zu diesem Zeitpunkt 80 Jahre [alt](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/alt/) und versagte körperlich. Seine Assistenten rieten ihm, einen Generalvikar zu wählen, und er wählte Michelangelo Tamburini, um ihm zu helfen. Die nächste „9-jährige“ Generalkongregation rückte näher und wurde für den Januar 1706 einberufen. Der General bestand darauf, der gesamten [Gesellschaft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gesellschaft/) seine eigenen moralischen [Ideen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ideen/) aufzuzwingen, und die Theologen sträubten sich dagegen. Als die Delegierten zur 15. Nach der Thronbesteigung von [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) James I. von England (1603-1625) sandte [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Paul V. einen [Brief](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/brief/), in dem er dem [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) gratulierte, in der [Hoffnung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/hoffnung/), der katholischen [Kirche](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kirche/) größeren Einfluss zu verschaffen. Die Aktionen von James in Schottland und insbesondere in [Irland](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/irland/) gegen die Katholiken zerstörten jedoch die Hoffnungen des Vatikans.  
[Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Paul V. traf sich mit dem Generalobersten der [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/), Claudio Acquaviva S.J. 1602 wurde ein Komplott zur Ermordung des Königs und des englischen Parlaments ausgeheckt. Acquaviva S.J. beauftragte den englischen [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) Henry Garnett S.J. der seinerseits die [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) in England aktivierte, um englische Adelsfamilien, die noch katholisch sind, zur Hilfe zu drängen.  
Oswald Tesimond S.J. Der Beichtvater mehrerer adeliger englischer Familien, darunter Robert Catesby, sicherte die finanzielle Unterstützung und die [Bildung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bildung/) des Geheimrates für das Attentat, das später als GunPowder Plot bekannt wurde.

Von versuchter politischer Ermordung (1605) Mindestens 13 katholische Adlige und 5 Jesuitenpriester bildeten auf Befehl des Generaloberen der [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) [Claudius](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/claudius/) Acquaviva eine Verschwörung, die als „Gunpowder Plot“ bekannt ist und einen Plan zur Explosion von 36 Fässern Schießpulver im Keller von das House of Lords und töten [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) James I. und die Mitglieder des Unterhauses, als sie sich zur Eröffnung des Parlaments am 5. November 1605 versammelten. April 1604 in die [Gesellschaft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gesellschaft/) ein und wurde nach seiner [Ordination](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ordination/) Professor für [Philosophie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/philosophie/) in Köln. Dann begann das [Bild](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bild/) aufzutauchen, als er zunächst Provinzial von Deutschland und dann deutscher Assistent wurde.  
Der plötzliche [Tod](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/tod/) von Gottifredi verursachte eine solche Bestürzung, dass es den Delegierten der 10. [Kongregation](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kongregation/) schwerfiel, einen schnellen Nachfolger zu [finden](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/finden/). Sie machten sich sofort an die [Arbeit](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/arbeit/). Eine weitere Abstimmung fand am 17. März 1652 in neun Tagen statt und die Delegierten wählten Pater Goswin Nickel mit 55 von 77 Stimmen zu einem 70-jährigen Deutschen.  
1652 entsandte General Nickel António Vieira S.J. ein mächtiger Jesuit aus Portugal nach Maranhão Brasilien, der von den Portugiesen als Estado do Maranhao festgehalten wird. Dort startete Vieira eine Missionsplantage mit einheimischen Indianern als Sklaven. 1653 berichtete Vieira General Nickel über den großen Erfolg der Sklavenmission und das Potenzial für großen wirtschaftlichen Wohlstand.  
Im April 1655 sandte General Nickel António Vieira S.J. an [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) [Johannes](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/johannes/) IV. von Portugal (1640-1656), der den [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) eine königliche Charta für die Kontrolle aller Missionen in Brasilien mit Vieira als Oberem verlieh. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Brasilien baute Vieira die Jesuiten-Sklavenplantagen erfolgreich auf eine Größe an, die bis 1661 über 250.000 Sklaven umfasste.  
1661 stoppte ein Aufstand der lokalen indischen Sklaven vorübergehend den Handel der [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) in Brasilien und António Vieira S.J. wurde zurückgerufen und nach [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) geschickt.  
Während seiner Amtszeit war er für die Gründung von Missionen in den entlegensten Regionen der Welt verantwortlich. Er musste seine [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) im Kampf gegen den [Jansenismus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jansenismus/) in [Frankreich](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/frankreich/) und den Niederlanden [ermutigen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ermutigen/) und dennoch moderieren. Nachdem Königin Christina ihren schwedischen Thron abgedankt, katholisch geworden und nach [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) gezogen war, hatte sie sich vorgenommen, dem General der [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) einen Besuch abzustatten.  
Wegen seiner Gebrechen bat er um einen Generalvikar, der ihm zur Seite [stand](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/stand/), und Pater John Paul Oliva wurde am 7. Juni 1661 in diese Position berufen.  
Oliva war die rechte [Hand](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/hand/) von Nickel, bis Nickel im [Alter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/alter/) von 80 Jahren diesen Gebrechen erlag und am 31. Juli 1664 starb, nachdem er zwölf Jahre lang General gewesen war. Er wurde von Gian Paolo Oliva (1664-1681) als Generaloberer abgelöst.

Nach 10 Jahren wurde er Rektor des English [College](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/college/), was ihn möglicherweise später als General dazu veranlasste, England zu einer eigenen Provinz zu machen und ein Noviziat in London zu gründen. Schließlich wurde er Provinzial von [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) und dann von Neapel und 1608 Assistent für [Italien](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/italien/).  
Nach dem [Tod](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/tod/) von [Aquaviva](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/aquaviva/) wurde die 7. Generalkongregation für den 5. November 1615 einberufen und sollte bis zum 6. Januar 1616 dauern. Am 15. November 1615 wurde der 51-jährige Vitelleschi zum 6. General der [Gesellschaft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gesellschaft/) gewählt.  
Er wurde oft für seine milde [Herrschaft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/herrschaft/) kritisiert, dennoch wuchs die [Gesellschaft](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gesellschaft/) auf über 16.000 Mitglieder und 35 Provinzen.  
Im Jahr 1619 genehmigte General Vitelleschi die Ernennung des von den [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) ausgebildeten Jan Pieterszoon Coen zum Generalgouverneur der VOC ([Duty](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/duty/) East India Company) (1618-1629).  
Die [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) versuchten, den Status quo des Bürgerkriegs innerhalb Japans zu ihrem Vorteil beizubehalten, doch 1639 gelang es dem japanischen Führer Tokugawa, die kriegführenden Fraktionen zu vereinen, als Shogun die [Jesuiten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/jesuiten/) prompt vertrieb.  
Nach 29 Jahren und 3 Monaten als General verstarb er am 9. Februar 1645 im [Alter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/alter/) von 82 Jahren. Vincenzo Carafa (1645-1649) trat die Nachfolge als Generaloberer an.

Seine [Verfassung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/verfassung/) gegen Zauberer und [Hexen](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/hexen/) (Omnipotentis Dei, 20. März 1623) war die letzte päpstliche Verordnung gegen Hexerei.  
Seine erste Amtshandlung als [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) bestand darin, seinen Sohn Ludovico Ludovisi zum [Kardinal](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kardinal/) und Staatssekretär zu ernennen, der für die tägliche [Regierung](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/regierung/) der [Kirche](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kirche/) verantwortlich war. Am selben Tag ernannte er seinen [Bruder](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bruder/) Orazio Ludovisi zum Chef der päpstlichen [Armee](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/armee/).  
Für die Ludovisi sicherte sich [Gregor](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/gregor/) zwei Herzogtümer, eines für seinen jüngsten [Bruder](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bruder/) Orazio, der 1621 ein Nobile Romano und ein Duca di Fiano machte, und das andere, das Herzogtum Zagarolo, das [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Neffe Ludovico Ludovisi 1622 von der [Colonna](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/colonna/) kaufte.  
Ein zweiter Sohn („Neffe“), Niccolò, wurde 1634 zum amtierenden [Fürsten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/fuersten/) von Piombino und Herrn der Isola d’Elba ernannt, nachdem er am 30. März 1632 die Erbin geheiratet hatte. Durch gut arrangierte politische Ehen für Niccolòs Nachkommen wurden weitere Titel verliehen verbündet mit dem Ludovisi-Clan.

Er studierte Rechtswissenschaften in [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) und Neapel, bekleidete nacheinander die Ämter des protonotären Apostolats, des Präsidenten der Apostolischen Kammer, des Kommissars des Marco di Roma und des Gouverneurs von Macerata.  
1647, im [Alter](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/alter/) von 36 Jahren, ernannte ihn [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Innozenz X. (1644–55) zum Kardinaldiakon mit dem Titel Santi Cosma e Damiano. Danach wurde er Legat von Ferrara.  
Im Jahr 1650 wurde Odescalchi [Bischof](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bischof/) von Novara, aber bis 1655 hatte er aufgrund seines opulenten Lebensstils und der Finanzierung seiner eigenen Miliz [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) gesamtes Vermögen ausgegeben und erhebliche Schulden angehäuft. 1656 verkaufte er seinen Titel als [Bischof](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bischof/) von Novara an seinen [Bruder](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/bruder/) Guilio und ging nach [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/).

(1667–69) im Jahr 1669 als ein starker päpstlicher Kandidat. [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Innozenz XI. War an weitreichenden außen- und innenpolitischen Aktionen beteiligt. [Der Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/der-papst/) machte sich sofort daran, die Gelder der [Kurie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/kurie/) von den päpstlichen Adelsfamilien in die Finanzierung von Bürgerkrieg, Diebstahl und Gewalt auf der ganzen Welt umzuleiten.  
Er unterstützte James II. Finanziell bei seinem gewaltsamen Versuch, den [Katholizismus](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/katholizismus/) in England wieder einzuführen.  
[Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Innozenz XI. Finanzierte die christlichen [Fürsten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/fuersten/), um die Türken aus Österreich und [Ungarn](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/ungarn/) zu vertreiben.  
Seine größte finanzielle und politische Kampagne war jedoch mit dem französischen [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) Ludwig XIV., Den er finanzierte und beauftragte, die [Protestanten](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/protestanten/) zu eliminieren. Infolgedessen widerrief [König](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/koenig/) Ludwig XIV. 1685 das Edikt von Nantes und tötete Zehntausende.  
Es kam jedoch zu einer Fehde zwischen [Papst](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/papst/) Innozenz XI. Und Ludwig XIV. Über die französischen päpstlichen Gebiete, die Ludwig XIV. In [sein](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/sein/) Herrschaftsgebiet integrieren sollte. Im November 1687 marschierten der französische Militärkommandeur Marquis de Lavardin und 800 Elitesoldaten in [Rom](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/rom/) ein und nahmen den Papstpalast gewaltsam in [Besitz](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/besitz/).  
Innocent XI starb am 12. August 1689.

Des Mordes: (1676) Die französische Aristokratin Marquise de Brinvilliers (1639-76) wird gefoltert, enthauptet und verbrannt, nachdem sie beschuldigt wurde, Hexerei eingesetzt zu haben, um Verwandte zu töten.  
Von Mord: (1677-81) Schätzungsweise 100 Menschen werden in 4 Jahren während der Hexenangst, die das österreichische Salzberg heimgesucht hat, gefoltert, enthauptet, erwürgt oder verbrannt.

Maffeo [Barberini](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/barberini/) wurde 1568 in eine bedeutende florentinische [Familie](http://cloud-zma.gleeze.com/catholicencyclopedia/glossary/familie/) geboren.
